Back pay from DLA & caring component UC
Hi There,
I am awaiting a decision from UC regarding back pay for the DLA & caring element of UC. The claim took 6 months to process. Awarded from June 2024 & was told last month when I told UC.
I just received this in my journal & forgive me for misunderstanding (I am on the spectrum) Do I receive anything back? It’s not made particularly that clear to me. Any advice would be appreciated.
One of the conditions for claiming Universal Credit following a change of circumstances is
that it is reported within a prescribed period. You must tell us about your change of
circumstances before the end of the assessment period in which the change occurred.
You reported a change that happened on 25 June 2024. This declaration was made
outside the assessment period in which the change happened.
The decision maker has reviewed the reasons for the delay in notifying us of the change.
On this occasion it has been decided that special circumstances apply and your Universal
Credit will be adjusted from the date of change.
Changes to your Universal Credit entitlement will be shown in your monthly statement.
If your circumstances change
You must tell Universal Credit straightaway if there is a change in your circumstances. If
you give wrong or incomplete information or you do not report changes straightaway you
may:
be prosecuted
need to pay a financial penalty
have your Universal Credit payments reduced or stopped
be paid too much money - you will have to pay back overpaid money when told to
do so.
Universal Credit is operated by the Department
Thank you

It means you are owed some money from the assessment period in which the DLA was awarded from…. June 2024.

thank you Poppy. I was understanding that I was owed money only from when I reported the change. The letters are quite confusing.
many thanks0 -
You're welcome. I agree that they are worded oddly, nothing new with DWP because they do like to confuse people. When it's paid from exactly will depend on the dates of your assessment periods or what date you usually receive your money.
Money owed will be paid as a separate payment and often takes quite a few weeks to pay it.
