Tax self assessment and UC

I need to submit my self assessment before the end of January. This is for the last tax year so 2023-2024. I claimed UC for a few months during the end of this period so the earnings aren’t for any months I claimed UC. I am worried that when I submit my self assessment they will class this as earnings from this month and reduce my upcoming payment. Will this happen?
Thanks

Heya @amy1188 oh no, it's that time again. I hated doing my self assessments. Luckily UC is tax free, so doesnt have to be declared as earnings when it comes to self assessments.

It’s a nightmare isn’t it! I know I don’t need to declare my UC to the tax man but I am worried that when I submit my self assessment that UC will treat it like my earnings from this month even though it is earnings from a year ago?

Why do you think UC will think that your self assessment would be earnings for this month? Self assessments have nothing to do with your UC.

because I thought HMRC will flag it as earnings? But I didn’t know if UC will know it is from the previous tax year or if they will just add it to this month?

It won’t be treated as earnings for this month. The only time something could flag is if you didn’t report earnings and expenses correctly each month for UC.
