Hi

We are at a loss as what to do. We currently have a mortgage on our town house. My husband has just had both legs amputated and now our property is not suitable for him. The council say they can’t help with adaptations as the house is unsuitable. The council won’t house us as we have our own property and we can’t sell it as by the time we pay the mortgage off we are left with barely anything and we can’t get a new mortgage as I don't earn enough ans my husband was self employed so he is only getting the basic pip and esa. We just dont know what to do as my husband can’t even get out the front door as the threshold is too high. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi @amb75, welcome to the community. I hope your husband is recovering okay after his amputations and I'm sorry to hear you're in a difficult situation with your housing.

If the council are unable to help, do you think any adaptations could be made yourselves to help make the house more accessible for your husband? I can understand if that's just not possible in your current house.

If it is possible, but the finances are difficult, Turn2us have a grant search that might be worth a look. Sometimes you can apply for grants to make adaptations yourselves:

If you feel the council aren't being supportive enough, you could try contacting your local councillors or MP. Sometimes they can take a look at your case and either advise on the next steps or add some pressure should the council not be providing enough support.

I hope some of our members might have some experiences and advice to share too.

Thankyou for replying. Unfortunately the house isn’t suitable for adapting even if we could raise funds to do it ourselves. The driveway is so steep we have been told to ramp it would take the whole driveway in a zig zag formation. Can the council help if we have a property with a mortgage? Our council is saying no. I will contact my MP though
