ACCESSABILITY. Poem (another)

Thisn is my contribution to Accessability poems.

The challange of Accessability.

The challange of accessability is a daily one
but some believe its only for the disabled ones,
But when are people going to realise I'm disabled 24/7
and design things with me in mind, not the ablebodied ones.

From the time that I get up, the challanges of the day begin,
How the hell do I get out of bed, without a cradle or swing,
My arms as useless, and my legs as well, I need to excercise, just to get up
starting with my ankles, and working all the way up.

Swinging round my arms, to get that circulation going
pumping those legs up and down, I'm warming up now
For those that may be watching, and seeing what's going on
I suppose I'm on the landing strip, ready, steady, go.

(it must look like a chick taking there first flying lessons)

With one final effort I swing my legs, up and in the air, and out
and throw my arms infront of me, with yes, a grunt, all my might.
my head is now rising, the strain on stomach and neck
Yes I've done it I have actually, arose from my soft bed.

So now I'm in a sitting position, my body all a glow
I'm out of breath, yes, even before I've started.
So while most think of access, to the bathroom and kitchen
or how to turn on the TV,
spare a thought for us disabled people each and every one.

Cause our day has just begun, my struggle does not end there,
its only just begun, where a new set of challanges has begun.
where most are already out the door,
I'm still sat here on my bum?

Oh mother nature what have you done, to make me go through this
I don't blaim you for what I am, but to others its a joke,
but remember, I have to do this just to start each day,
or just function in a world not designed for this.

All this every day, and I'm not out of the door
who designed the bathroom and kitchen access,
or stairs that don't fit me, and my wheel chair.
and that's assuming I've even got that far.

The hights are all wrong, you need to be down here
and tell me how I'm supposed to reach when sat in this wheel chair.Well it's not all gloom and doom, you can get modifications done.
but need to fill out an assessment form to tell them what is wrong.

The same as the NHS, who give me treatment and medication
I have to tell them every thing, so that they can help and make a modification,
With this in mind, the outside world is now accessible
for others like me, and others that are worse, its all waiting for me.

The only problem I have, is making people understand
Its not about the blue badge, or free road tax allowance,
But to understand why I need them, and that I just cannot walk
instead of moaning I pinched the parking space on that hard stand.

Worse of all the hidden illness, the ones that they don't see
that on the outside I look great, but inside there's a struggle,
my own brain is fighting me, hey I'm on your side
Just help me get the word out of the Challanges of Accessability.

So now I've had my moan, and some say thank god for that
but remember when in work, if your ability, to say use your hands,
would you cope, or lost your sight, or you could not walk
Would you adapt when forced to join my world.

I STILL BELIEVE YOURS IS BETTER.

    Accessability? Poem "true meaning."

    Accessability, what does it mean,

its how to get in some where

or just to get to be seen

but for those that are "disabled"

    its a way of life,

    If its not accessible

then you can't get on with life.

Who cares about the stairs, to get into that shop

who cares about I live in that big tower block

Who cares that there is no access to my wheel chair

Or that I'm pregnant and about to give birth

who cares that the high street is not just a fraze

who cares that the bus route means streets and curbs.

Unless you have a problem that needs something else

its not only about being disabled, althought I think it helps

I little fore-thought when you park that car

That parking on the pavement means access is denighed

Those young children who are off to school

have to pass on the road that was made for cars

To take them in the car dressed in PJ's seems the thing

but what about the access to those that are crossing.

The Zebra crossing is for us not a place to park

where cars are speeding because access has been denighed.

So spare a thought for access, you may need it yourself one day

When your kids have an accident, and a car is in the way.

"Access is not an after thought."
