Hi, my name is Sil, a mum of two, I’m autistic with ADHD and a children's yoga teacher

Hi everyone, I’m Sil, a mum of two, and I’m autistic with ADHD. My personal experiences and challenges have shaped my journey into becoming a yoga teacher and personal trainer, both of which have been key to maintaining my physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
I’m now looking to start yoga and speech therapy classes in collaboration with a speech therapist. The aim is to use mindfulness and yoga as tools to support speech development, communication skills, and emotional self-regulation, which can often be challenging for neurodivergent individuals.
If this is something that might benefit your child, I’d love your thoughts. What elements do you think would be helpful to include in these sessions?
I truly appreciate your time and input—thank you in advance! 😊

Hello Sil and welcome to the Scope forum 💜
What a wonderful occupation to have found for yourself!
My daughter was lucky enough to experience mindfulness sessions at primary school. She was also allowed to keep a water bottle in class and that definitely helped to control her emotional outbursts - when she remembered to drink it 😉
Neither of us had an ASD diagnosis then but having witnessed the dramatic effect water had on her, I now carry water with me everywhere and it calms me down in an instant. Such a simple thing which makes all the difference. What elements do you think would be helpful to include in these sessions? Water 😄
Music held her interest and helped her develop confidence and self-expression. We attended yoga classes together and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed going.
Thank you for this thread and I will now make the effort to find a group near me. I think after lockdown, we forgot about all sorts of things.

Thank you for your lovely response! 🙂
I always let the kids keep their water bottles with them, but I never realised how beneficial it could be. I really appreciate you pointing that out.
Join yoga classes again whenever you can, there are so many great benefits!

I'm glad to hear it Sil!
May I also suggest avoiding overhead lighting and using plenty of textiles to absorb sound in the room. I wear earplugs and headphones and can still hear people speak. Ridiculously sensitive! The downside of wearing them outdoors is that people think I can't hear them 😖
Noise coming from different directions I find confusing so that's another consideration for you.
I dreamt about my daughter as a little girl last night and I think it must have been this dialogue so thank you, it was a lovely dream 😍

Aww that’s lovely to hear ☺️
I totally understand what you’re saying; I’m very sensitive to all sounds around me too and can be overwhelming.
Thank you very much for your suggestions! 🙏🏼😊0
