My son has CFS/ME and in his early 20s and I am looking for any advice to support him in the jobs market as he cannot manage a 9 to 5 five days a week schedule.

    Hello @PaulG114.

Our free employment services might be of use or interest to your son. You can read more about them on our website Scope Employment Services.

Would he consider some voluntary work to see how he manages - there are so many volunteering opportunities. The hours would be more flexible and most places are just glad of the extra support - ad hoc hours are totally ok.

Great for CVs if it works out well, great confidence booster and just that step into the workplace without the commitment.

Or could he manage some part time studying or studying at home? Colleges are generally very supportive and accomodating.

Self employment is something else to consider because it can be flexible. My daughter has her own business selling her artworks.

She had no health issues to start but unfortunately has long covid - she managed to keep her business going even when she was unable to manage the stairs to her flat and was housebound - amazing what can be done from a computer these days!

Thankfully, she has made progress in her recovery but still has periods of exhaustion. She never stopped working though which she definitely would have had to in any other job.

A few ideas and hopefully Scope can help too. Maybe even the job centre can help?! Has been known (!)
