The theme for World Wildlife Day 2025 is Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and the Planet. It looks at how we can all work together to finance wildlife conservation effectively and sustainably for a positive future for our planet. There are over 1 million species that are faced with the threat of extinction and the world's wildlife population has reduced by around 73% since 1970! In the UK we have lost 70% of our ancient woodlands, our rivers are polluted, and wildflower meadows are disappearing.

Endangered Species

Black rhino (Critically endangered)

Rhinos communicate through honks and sneezes and love rolling around in mud. They are victims of poaching, with gangs removing their horns to be used in traditional Asian medicine.

Tiger (Endangered)

Tigers have been around for roughly 2 million years! Unfortunately, their numbers have dwindled due to poaching and loss of habitat. There are now more tigers in captivity in the US than in the wild.

Mountain Gorilla (Endangered)

Humans share around 98% of DNA with these magnificent creatures! The main threat is habitat loss as land is converted for agriculture.

Hawksbill Turtle (Endangered)

These are found in the waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean. Their numbers have reduced by 80% as they are accidentally captured in fishing nets, and the illegal trade of their shells.

How you can get involved

  • You can watch the live event from Geneva, Switzerland via YouTube.
  • Sign the World Wildlife Fund petition to encourage our government to create a Living Planet Act that can help protect nature which will allow farmers to produce affordable food without harming nature or the climate.
  • Listen to the Call of the Wild podcast which discusses how we can all make a difference.

What you can do to help

  • Buy second-hand products to reduce landfill waste and the carbon footprint from producing new products.
  • 'Upcycle' and fix items.
  • Follow these tips to save water.
  • Make your garden wildlife-friendly.

Do you already follow any of these tips?

Do you know any more wildlife facts?

I decided to celebrate by watching Blue Planet whilst painting a miniature of a mouse riding a frog. 😁

it seems rather ironic that its human greed that lead to animals decline and then they expect public donations to help save them when will we ever learn
