PIP REVIEW DUE I HAVE TWO CONDITIONS TO ADD

On my PIP award letter it says I will hear from pip after 30March this year for a review, my award ends next April.

I have two conditions to add , the first is that I have profound hearing loss and wear hearing aids in both ears. Even with the hearing aids I still have difficulty hearing people and I recently almost got knocked down because i do not hear traffic , I saw the audiologist Wednesday and she said i have to be alert all the time .

The second condition is severe obstructive sleep apnea and I use a cpap machine. It's taken me over a year to use it properly and I need to have my husband sit with me every night while I relax and fall to sleep as i have a phobia of masks, I use a nasal cushion , but I still have panic attacks and feel claustrophobic which causes me extreme anxiety and panic .

I have heard that reviews are being extended by up to a year , but with these conditions that really do affect my life should I report them if my award is extended until 2027 instead of 2026 ?

Thanks if anyone knows .

Can I ask which components of PIP you receive and at what rate?

If this were me I would report the deafness as that should entitle you to a long term award.

I would mention the sleep apnoea and the cpap machine but that condition can be reversed with life style changes such as losing weight so they will take that into account when deciding on the length of award for that particular condition that it could improve.

I'm new to this community, I've had an assessment as my pip is coming to an end. This has been going on for 22 weeks and recently had a text saying I may need a face-to-face interview. With all these new things going on I'm very concerned about getting my award back. As the new rules are due to start in November 26 will they give me an award till then or will I get one for 5 years like my last award.

Sorry if I have gone about asking the question on hear as I couldn't work out how to start a new page.

I had my sleep apnea review Tuesday and she said it cannot be reversed as i have central AI where my brain doesn't tell me to breath and I have severe obstruction sleep apnea 40 times an hour I stop breathing , not caused by weight ,she said I am not overweight , they think its hereditary , but if it is we think it was from my dad but he died in 2017 and I know 100% he had sleep apnea undiagnosed and had heart issues and diabetes which are both conditions of sleep apnea.

Should I call the dwp and report the deafness before they send the review form ?

I asked the sleep nurse if it can be cured, she said it can sometimes be improved , but once therapy is stopped the events would start to get higher , she said it can be treated with cpap therapy .

If it was me I would write to them about the deafness.

I don't know how to do this as I've never had a review before , can I do this on my universal credit journal ? Thank you for your reply to me .

Universal Credit and PIP are separate benefits, so you can't use your Journal.

    You'd need to ring PIP on 0800 121 4433.

Hi @sarah_lea12 - you do not have to report new conditions to the DWP &, so far as your PIP goes, unless you feel your conditions may mean you might increase your daily living component from the standard to enhanced rate, I wouldn't report them, as this would be seen as a 'Change of circumstances' & you'd be sent new forms to complete & likely need another assessment. This could result in your award staying the same, increasing, or even decreasing, so there is some risk involved.

Review forms are being sent out about 8 months before your current award is due to end so it may be better to wait until then to mention these new conditions. Use of a CPAP machine is for nighttime so may have little impact on your PIP award.

I agree with chiarieds advice, PIP is about the descriptors not the medical condition. As he/she said reporting a change makes a referral for assessment more likely, so I would only do it if you think it means more points enough for higher award.

Thank you , my award letter says they will contact me after March 30th 2025 to see if any changes, so I will wait . I have 10 points on daily living and 12 on mobility , I hope the hearing aids and the way it affects my daily life will get me 2 more points so would get me the enhanced daily living .

Hi @sarah_lea12 - it may also be possible to get 2 points for the washing & bathing descriptor if you need to have a visual aid as wouldn't be able hear a smoke alarm going off.

Having deafness and needing 2 NHS hearing aids qualifies for a free disabled bus pass.

That's how I qualified for mine, even though I have other disabilities.

The council just noted my deafness.

Having 2 hearing aids also got me 2 points on PIP, I'm sure they said that's automatic if it's NHS hearing aids.

Thanks , they are NHS hearing aids, I have to have them changed though as I cannot hear well with the digital ones , I am going for the ear moulds 13th April . It's a shame i need to wait for the review to come through the post as I need 2 points to get me enhanced daily living , and I would love it of course if I were awarded long term PIP .

I can get a free bus pass with enhanced mobility , but I think I will contact the council because my hearing affects my safety while out and I think I'd be passed for a blue badge now .

If you scored 8 or more points for the 'moving around' part of the mobility component, or 10 points for descriptor E under the 'planning a journey' activity, then you'll automatically qualify for a Blue Badge & can apply online: https://www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge

My council said no , but I just put another application in because I have profound hearing loss and I do not hear oncoming traffic . I was nearly hit by a car and a bike few weeks back . I added the letter from the NHS audiologist for my appointment which says about my hearing aids on it . They will email me and I can go from there , but i really hope this time I get the blue badge .

I've applied for a blue badge today , spoken to the blue badge team and they will look at my application form because of my hearing loss .
