Backdated SDP

Hi, first time posting here. I have a son who claims PIP higher rate for both living and mobility. Also gets ESA in support group. I am his appointee. He started claiming ESA in 2016 but moved out in 2019. We let DWP know of his change of address and that he was living alone but may need occasional overnight care. Nobody is claiming carers allowance and that was that. A few weeks back we found out he should haveof possibly been entitled to SDP from March 2919. I called ESA and the lady filled the form in over the phone. The lady said he met the criteria for SDP and seems to think that the person who took the call in 2019 when he moved assumed I was living with him with being his appointee. She said there may be some extra money goes onto his next ESA payment and that a backdated payment to 2019 would obviously take longer. I am wondering how long people have waited for an initial payment to be added onto their ESA. I am aware any large back payment would take some time to come through due to checks etc. Many thanks.

Hi @NeuroEve and a warm welcome to the community!
The timing to receive a backpayment is usually around 6 to 12 weeks from the time the eligibility is confirmed but this can vary☺️1 -
Hi Mary, thanks for the reply. If I contacted them 2 weeks ago and our sons ESA has gone in today with no extra added on for SDP, when would he expect to have his ESA updated to the new amount. I know the back payment will take longer but should he expect his regular payment to be updated any time soon going forward.

Getting the extra in each payment is usually sorted out a lot quicker than the backpay.
Unfortunately we can't be any more specific re timeframes from here.

Thanks, hopefully the first payment will be on in few weeks if not I shall give them a call then see if we have to fight for his backdated payment.

I can’t give you exact timeframe but can tell you mine was roughly 3 month for backpay to be calculated and paid.
also if you your son was found to be eligible and is backdated brace yourself for quite a big amount of back pay he will receive most likely over 10k for the period you spoke of.
hoping all goes smoothly for him.1 -
thanks sd100, yeah my sister is an accountant and looked up rates from Match 1st 2018 till March 2025. She worked out each year and it came to just over 25k. I don’t think they will pay out without a fight but I could be wrong.

I’m not sure of exact numbers to be honest but give or take a few pounds each year for different rates, the sdp is about £50 a week and if your son qualifies there is no fight they will pay it, as long as he qualified for those years there is no reason for them to fight it.
many people were in similar situation of not knowing about sdp myself included and from my knowledge the dwp are trying to make it right and backpay all that were owed.
sounds crazy I know the dwp trying to do the right thing.
All the best1 -
also not sure if you are aware but it will be backdated from the years your son lived by himself and claimed esa and pip at same time, and I think you mentioned that was from 2019.
I’m not quite sure about the £24K figure I’m guessing more around £13k backdated for 5 years, still a lot of money and hopefully helps your son and yourself deal with the financial hardships many of us are facing right now.0 -
He moved out on the 1st March 2018 and has lived alone the whole time since. If the rates are paid back on what each tax year states the rates were say 2018 to 2019, 2019 to 2020 and so on my sister calculated it to be £25,583. She calculated each individual year at the rate for that year till the 18th March 2025. If he got anything back he would be grateful. I contacted them today just to ask if they had taken any action to put it onto his current weekly amount and the gentleman said the initial new amount could take a few more weeks to show. Hopefully it will be sorted before he had to migrate over to us, ad that hasn’t come yet. But we just take each thing as it comes otherwise I would make myself ill worry about something I have no control over. Thanks for the reassurance though it’s appreciated and nice to see someone get monies that they are rightfully entitled to.

sounds like it’s in the process which means it will get sorted, they will add the extra amounts going forward onto his payments pretty quick, but the back pay could take upto 3 months but in all honesty I wouldn’t worry now because sounds like it’s happening.
If there are any monies your son may owe the dwp for mistakes in past or some kind of crisis loan etc, they will deduct that off the backpay and pay the remaining money in a few different payments at the same time.
Best of luck and try not to stress it will be paid if everything you have told them checks out.
Can’t see why it wouldn’t.

And not to pry but your sisters calculations may be off still if just calculating the sdp over that period.
if she’s calculating other things extra that I wasn’t aware of from you post then I apologise.0 -
But your sister may actually be right cos my math not the best lol

I got rates wrong I thought was roughly £50 a week but it’s actually roughly £80 a week sdp so you well good be expecting exactly what you thought.
my apologies1 -
Just an update, a payment for £244.50 went in yesterday so I am assuming that’s 3 weeks from the 18th March. Will see what his next regular ESA payment is and then assume a letter will come and hopefully confirm any back payment to March 2018.
