@Ranald I am so glad you've asked that..... it came a week ago Thursday, as did the autobiography too. I won't say how long I've spent looking for them this morning as hope to start reading the Rd to Wigan Pier, don't know if this photo comes out clear enough but some good photos (but sad) and the books are very reasonable condition as second hand. Now off to look for the Autobiography, I've only got a 1 bed bungalow how hard can it be 😬🙄 and good morning to you 😊

So sorry. Edited. Shows 2 photos, just found the other book which the photo of his Nat. Union of journalists' photo is in.

I have 1 bedroom council house too, and things vanish just the same!

Have you managed to locate the book yet? I am keen to know how you are getting on with it!

@RanaldOMG I am shocked! Yes, I found it, on the bookshelf where I'd put it and looked twice already 🙄😬🙄😬.

So only started it this afternoon and only on page 25. The first part about the couple Mr and Mrs Brooker completely put me off eating today, I am not joking, made me gag eeugh (don't think I'll look at a slice of white bread in quite the same way). Very sad really as it's true but Orwell's funny how he writes so descriptively - doesn't pull any punches. Now on the part about the mines, I cannot believe I did honestly not know the conditions and I am so shocked by them. Unimaginable really. I'm hoping to read this Part 1 by tonight as I have problems with my eyes often so want to read it while I can. Thanks so much for the recommendation! I'm suspecting Part II will be harder to read/politics etc, but I'll give it a good go hopefully tomorrow. This has got me back into reading though and I've some good books to get through. So thanks again, very much, for mentioning this book, I'm grateful as I'm resuming my lifelong passion for books, eyes willing!

The 'Scotch miner' is a character, and it is sad to hear about the pensioners in the attic and the travelling salesmen. I had better shut up now and not spoil it.

Oh @Ranald I've just finished reading Part I. Started Part II but can't carry on until tomorrow hopefully.

Sadly, if I were to replace the word 'Unemployed' with 'Sick or Disabled' the inequities and poverty are still real today, albeit a different time (sorry too tired to speak).

I don't know if you've heard of Sir Michael Marmot but he came to my mind whilst nearing the end of Part I as I've followed most of what he's written for years. It led to me finding a debate held in the House of Lords referring to PIP /the disabled/sick. I'll post the link to it on the Green Paper thread but can feel a letter coming on to Sir Michael re his view on the current debacle. I think it's the Institute of Inequity that he heads up. I think the Debate I'm referring to was fairly recent? Last year, definitely post-pandemic. Anyway, all the best to you, I think I've got scaffolding being removed tomorrow (should have been today and yesterday 🙄) so expect not to be able to read much but Part II looks fairly straightforward to read/assimilate although, time will tell!

Any further recommendations please feel free to let me know 🫠. Got the biography to read yet too. I only really read non- fiction (although depending who's written it some of that's probably fiction).
