SDP back payment and the effect on care contributions

Hello
My son has just received a large payment from DWP as a back payment relating to unpaid SDP. They have stated that the payment is disregarded in certain circumstances as is classed as ‘official error of £5000 or more’. I believe that this will be disregarded for housing and council tax benefit, but have mixed messages as to if this will be disregarded when he is assessed for contributions towards his care. He is in Supported living and receives a care at home package. I think they may only disregard the amount for 12 months, but am not entirely sure and then I believe that they have strict rules as to what any money can be spent on within that time, or could be classed as deprevation of capital. I am about to contact them and advise them of this payment, but would like to know what to expect.
Has anyone had any experience of this? I am finding it all very confusing.
Thank you
