Hi, my name is Mog23! Should I mention my working aspirations in my ESA appointment?

hi I have a New Style ESA telephone appointment shortly in regards to Claimant Commitment interview. I am new to claiming any type of benefits and I have currently got a 'fit note' for initially 4 weeks but I am living with some long term chronic health conditions. I am struggling big time so can't presently work and know I will be limited due to health issues in the future ( I have been fighting against claiming but I can't carry on like this) . I think that the 'Support Group' would be the best fit for me in the longer term as I aim to work part time when I hopefully, fit enough to as part of the 'permitted working'. Should I state that this is what I aim to do or is it best not to mention my working aspirations at this point in case it could jeopardise me claiming an on going benefit or risk being put into the work related activity group? (which will not be good for my health) I welcome any advice as overwhelmed by it all and don't know what to expect. Many Thanks in advance.

Please read this guide for an idea of what to expect. You should be honest with your work coach so unrealistic goals are not expected of you.

Hi @Mog23, welcome to the community. It can be really overwhelming joining the benefits system for the first time, but I hope it all goes smoothly for you.
The initial claimant commitment appointment is often to talk about what you're able to do at the moment so they can start your claim up.
It is often best to be as open as possible in these things so you get the right support. Make sure you mention your health issues are long term and how they're affecting your ability to work at the moment.
At some point you might be invited to fill out a health form and have a work capability assessment, that'll usually decide which group you'll be put into and whether you'll have any further commitments.
Best of luck with your appointment, I hope it goes well 😊
