I am concerned the the job centre staff have little understanding of autism my adult son is seeking work but due to having panic attacks on public transport we have asked if we can look for work in walking distance which is do able as we live in a town. His work coach got pushy with him today arranging an Interview 11 miles away,we have already given them A letter from GP explaining his problems with travel. He was visibly upset by this mans approach today and I had to email him explaining the problem - all I got was he will have to get a sick note - I said No he’s not sick just need some adjustments - they are totally uninterested in their clients - just a tick list - you got to do as we say or there will sanctions imposed, I did get a bit bossy and said I an a parent and a registered learning disability nurse - where is all this support? I am very angry and feel that outside of education and health nobody has a understanding of autism or don’t want to …….

Sick notes (or Fit Notes as they are now known) aren't just for people who cannot work.
A GP can write down the adjustments needed to enable work.

I'm sorry your son had to go through that. Your anger is well justified! It's a disgrace that the work coach chose not to accept your son's GP letter or advise appropriately regarding a fit note (which he should have known). Goodness only knows where they get these people from. Wishing you, and your son, all the best.

It's such a shame as it doesn't need to be that way. Good luck to your son for finding something suitable that he can get to easily.
