PIP payments stopped despite PIP award

I help my son with his PIP applications, he was granted PIP from July 2020 to Dec 2023.

In Apr 23, he was asked to complete an ‘Award Review’, which we did. In Nov 23, he received a letter stating as they had not yet been able to completed the review, the award was extended until Dec 24, or until the review was completed.

The Interview took place in June 2024, and in Sept 2024 a letter was received confirming PIP awarded at a slightly reduced level from June 24 until June 27.

In Oct 2024, further letter received stating his PIP award would end in Dec 2024, unless a new PIP claim was made. I assumed this was a cross over of letters and took no action. However in Dec 2024, PIP monies stopped.

Have written to PIP, referring them to their letter of Sept 24 and the award until June 27, but they have replied referring him to the letter of Oct 24 and saying a new claim will need to be started.

Can anyone advise why my son needs to start a new claim? There has been no change in circumstances and no other correspondence from PIP. Thank you.

@Cody0709 That is strange. Obviously I have not come across this before. Trying to get my head around it I have come up with the following:-

When your son got his new award from June 24 to June 27 did his money he received go down, as you state it was a slightly less award?

The DWP's last letter stating a new claim is needed is your son's latest letter dated October 24, so I can see why they have referred back to that letter. Why, I am guessing but maybe there is some wrong with his current award, their mistake, it must be.

I am only trying to help here with thoughts as it is a strange situation.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, they stopped the PIP payments in June 24, and in Sept 24 after issuing their award letter, backdated them at the lower level (I.e. new award amount) for June to Sept, and then until Dec 24, paid monthly at the new reduced rate. So this suggests the new award was not just a letter sent in error as they actually paid the amount stated in the letter.

Do you know who does he appeal to, if we believe the PIP payments have been stopped in error?

Your son definitely got a new award, I see that now, that has answered my query and it was awarded to June 27. So there is something wrong. I am stumped now. You need to contact the DWP and as Kimi has suggested you could put in a formal complaint. We can't do anymore without DWP intervention here. Your son was awarded a new award and the DWP are working on his old award from what I can see, so they need to be involved now. Keep us informed!

Thank you again for your help, we will contact the DWP on the basis that we feel an error has been made.
