Happy Pride Month!πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

June is LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) Pride Month. a time to celebrate love, equality, strength, resilience and of course, pride! But often, people who are both disabled and LGBTQ+ are left out of the conversation, have parts of their identity overlooked or misunderstood and face harmful stereotypes and stigma.

That’s why this month we’re celebrating and uplifting disabled LGBTQ+ voices and experiences. Personally, this is something I am really passionate about because I’m proud to be part of both communities too!

In England and Wales, LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be disabled than non-LGBTQ+ people. According to the 2021 Census, 28.8% of people who identified as LGB+ were disabled compared to 20.1% of the overall population. The Census also found that transgender people were more likely to report being in bad or very bad health and were more likely to have a disability than those who are not transgender.

This all shows that disability is a big part of the LGBTQ+ community which is why this month we will be looking at…

  • Intersectionality of disability, sexuality and gender identity
  • Accessibility at Pride events and celebrations and how to get support
  • Disabled LGBTQ+ representation in media
  • How to be a better ally for LGBTQ+ disabled people
  • History of Pride
  • Common myths and misconceptions about LGBTQ+ disabled people
  • Signposting and support for LGBTQ+ disabled people and their families
  • And much more!!!

Is there anything you would like to see or celebrate this Pride month on the community? Can be serious or just a bit of fun, please let us know below!
