Hi @Catherine21 , sorry to hear you feel so bad. Is it 60mg a day you're on? And is this your first week of reducing the dose by 10mg a week?
I would recommend you ringing your pharmacist for advice tomorrow and telling them your symptoms (they may though advise you to ask your GP as they've decided how to taper it). If you can't get an appt I'd email them.
It is always recommended to reduce it over at least a minimum of 4 weeks which your GP is doing but it's still wise to let them know how it's affecting you. You might need to reduce it over a longer period. Take good care of yourself it's horrid when you can't sleep. Sending you very warmest wishes too xx

I took it religiously every night for a few years, ages ago, and I believe my debilitating Tinnitus is due to it.
Didn't you mean 50mg, as it comes in tablets of 10mg, 25mg or 50mg?
Your GP should've switched you first to 25mg and let you take it for a while before going down to 10mg. Tapering is all about cutting it down gradually and your GP should know this perfectly well.
Although, unlike Diazepam (Valium), Amitriptyline is not addictive or habit forming and its withdrawal symptoms are mild for most of people, people can still get side effects if they stop it suddenly.
It's quite normal to experience sleep problems, irritation, restlessness, etc., if you cut it down from 50mg to 10mg all of a sudden, because your body got used to the higher dose.
I think you should speak to your GP.
I agree with you, I wonder whether it's the right time to taper it!
If I say more, moderators would think that I'm running a GP on Scope!😀

Oh @Catherine21 I'm sorry your Fifi seems to be getting worse. I just don't know with my Snicket, some nights he cries and wanders around (doesn't tend to in the day much but will go and sit under my desk which he never used to) and some nights he's more settled. I woke up at 1am today and he was snuggling up right next to me which he doesn't normally do. He's costing me a fortune in chicken, it's all he'll eat at the moment but not complaining I don't want him to be hungry. It's too sad when they're getting old but he's only 9. Take good care Catherine xx
