I have the same problem I had a leg below knee Amputated September last year. I was sent home in a wheelchair and had a hospital bed and commode in situ. I have been unable to get my wheelchair through 2 doors in my flat . so I still have my friend to empty it up to today I can not get out into the garden same issue also I have to have a 2man crew to take me and wheelchair to my rehab have 5 steps to get out. There are 3 flats in this house my Association will not fit a ramp or hand bars as there are other people using the steps to the Front door. I could use the back way as no one uses it I do have a gate to get out that way . I have had the Occupational Therapist did her report and I am still house bound I am washing in my kitchen sink still where or what will be my next step I ring my housing try and get the Aids and Adaptions to find out what is happerning keep getting told they will email me or ring me which they do not what do I do next I am 68 years old being stonewalled by my housing help

Hi @VALVAL57, welcome to the community. I'm really sorry you're struggling to get the help you need at home.

If the council aren't being helpful, could you perhaps try your MP? They might be able to lend some support to your claim or push the council to help out.

Find your MP - MPs and Lords - UK Parliament

I hope you're able to find a solution soon.

The Occupational Health Visitor will liase with your local council on your behalf.

I had my home adapted in 2015 through her help. The wheels of various departments move slowly unfortunately. The OCHV did tell me that some things weren’t suitable for me and she was wonderful. I didn’t hear anything further for a while, and I started to think that nothing would come from it. I was very wrong. I received a letter from the council advising me that they had a budget of just over £9,000 to make my home accessible. They sent me a list of their trusted tradesmen, and I had then decided which one would do the best job for the agreed price. They were absolutely brilliant.
No more steps, my front door is accessible, and I have a modern looking white wet room. Even the OT was very impressed with the job done. Photographs were taken as evidence, but there was a clause that I had to stay in my home for 7 years because I am fortunate enough to own my own home.

Good luck with it - and don’t get too downhearted by the lack of response just yet. If you have any questions, then ask your OT if she has referred any work to be done to the council xx
