Housing allocation

Hi there

I’m in the process of being nominated to a HA by my LA for a 2 bed wheelchair adapted property but the HA are saying that I’m not eligible for a 2 bed as I live on my own.

The reason the LA have said a 2 bed is because my condition is progressive and will eventually mean I have to have a live in carer and also the need to store extra medical equipment too. In effect we’re looking to future proofing things so I don’t have to move twice.
Any thoughts on how/if this can be achieved?

Thank you

You need to tell the HA that.

If you can get written support from your health providers - consultant rather than GP if possible, who can confirm this then that may help.

However, 2 beds are needed for people who need them now. I understand that you wish to futureproof, that is very sensible. But due to housing crisis and your need today for only a 1 bed accommodation, I know that you may not get what you want. The need is assessed as immediate and near future, i.e. next 6 months. Not what might happen.

I could have written my last sentence more carefully. You know your condition is progressive. However, housing allocations in HA and local authority are under pressure and over subscribed to house people needing 2 beds today. It is nigh impossible to get an accommodation on the fact that you will need one in future. Be prepared to be told that if you want a 2 bed now that the private sector may be able to help you.

I know, it isn't what you want. It is the availability or lack of which means that immediate needs are prioritised.
