The day has been created to celebrate photography and its advancements over time, making it part of our everyday lives!

Did you know?

The word “photography” is a combination of two Greek words, which translates to “writing with light”. A beautiful way to describe this form of expression.

It dates back more than 800 years when the camera obscura was invented. (This means “dark chamber”). The camera obscura was a dark box with a hole on one side where light would pass through to project an image onto the flat inner surface. When the light disappeared, as did the image.

Where we were then and now is miles apart! We have cameras at our finger tips and use these in our every day lives in the form of expression, to capture memories with loved ones, or beautiful sights.

There are many photo’s considered the most famous today, one of these is Henri Cartier-Bresson’s famous “Man Jumping the Puddle” circa 1930 (shown here).

The French photographer is often referred to as the father of modern photojournalism. This photo is the perfect example of what he described as “The Decisive Moment”.
