UC Claim Delayed Since May -No Payment or Statement

Hi all,

I claimed Universal Credit on May 23, and my first assessment period ended June 22, but as of July 14, I’ve received no payment, no statement, and no decision at all — not even a nil award.

I’ve done everything required (no outstanding To-Dos), and the only update I’ve had is that they’re still "working out my student finance". But I was under the impression this should have been processed by the end of the first period.

Even if I’m not entitled to anything, I should still be given a statement explaining why. Instead, I’ve been left in limbo for over 7 weeks.

I did receive an advance payment at the start of my claim, but now I’m in serious financial difficulty with no follow-up support. I’ve also submitted a formal complaint, but no progress so far.

Now I’m almost at the end of my second assessment period (June 23–July 22) — still with no decision on anything. I’ve already claimed the advance payment, so I’m out of support and heading toward financial crisis. I don’t know whether I’ll get one payment, two, or nothing — and the lack of clarity is exhausting.

Even if I’m not entitled, I should have received a nil award statement — but I’ve had no formal decision at all. I’ve messaged my journal, phoned UC, and even made a formal complaint, but no one can give me a clear answer.

Has anyone experienced this kind of delay over student finance?
Did you escalate it, and if so, how did you get movement?

Any help or advice would really be appreciated.

Any advice appreciated — thanks in advance.

Hi @sonu1234, sorry to hear that there have been so many delays, that must put you in a really difficult position. And incredibly frustrating too as it looks like you've been really proactive trying to get answers.

You could perhaps contact your MP , they can sometimes help with DWP related issues so it could be worth a try to see if they can help hurry things along for you:

Contact your MP - UK Parliament

Some councils offer grants and payments to help if things are tough financially, so that maybe worth looking into if you're struggling:

Get help with the cost of living from your local council - GOV.UK

Hope you can get things sorted out quickly and without too much more stress.
