hello everyone I know council tax reduction is down to individual councils but I have found myself in a strange situation.

So last year my 75% discount was reduced to 50% due to carers allowance being used as income. It never previously was. I tried to fight it to no avail.
I had my new bill in April this year for the new year ahead and it was the same, a 50% discount.
Now I’ve had a new bill and I’m only getting 25% discount.

I am on uc with my partner. Lcwra and Receive pip enhanced, my parter is my carer. He works one day a week this being under the £411 work allowance.

Nothing this year has changed as in what we receive. I can’t work out why my council have now reduced my help even further. I’ve got to find another £50 extra a month plus top my rent up. Would anyone have an ideas. My council could not explain why carers was classed as income last year despite it being taken off Uc. I have no belief in them that they will be able to provide me with the latest calculation. They are also extremely difficult to talk to.

thanks all x

I would contact the council, make it clear you want further information on how the claim is calculated and if they have changed the rules since last year, ask them to send you the details.

    Always consider the following.
    Human error is possible.
Council may have changed its rules on entitlement, this is down to each individual council.
They may have incomplete or inaccurate information regarding your circumstances, you should be able to confirm this if they send you details of how they calculated your support.

If it does turn out the lower award is correct, and you are struggling financially, you might be eligible for discretionary support. If they run such a scheme.

Your local council should have details of the criteria for CTR in their website.

As above they are free to change their rules each year.
