An important Disabled facility grant question

Hi, at the beginning of the year I had an extension built onto my house for a toilet through the facility grant scheme, and it has changed my life.

But, I want to know how many times you can apply for a grant. I have a lock on my front door which are exterior doors and then I have the main door. the key to open the old doors is up high and due to my pain and lack of mobility, I cannot reach the lock and have to wait for someone to open the door for me which is embarrassing.

I have mentioned this to them when they were sorting the extension which to be honest took four years to get it done, but they showed no interest.

I really need advice from someone on if I can apply again. I have had someone out to see if the lock can be lowered and they said no because they are old doors.

Hi @happyman. From the information I've found, you can apply more than once for a Disabled Facilities Grant providing you're still eligible for it. You may need to check with your local authority to make sure, though.

Do you have an idea of how much the adaptations will cost? Disabled Facilities Grants are usually for work that will cost above £1000, but some councils have funds for smaller projects too.

There's some information about housing adaptations on the Scope website here if you'd like to read through it:

In general, an individual can only apply for one Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for a particular property or set of works at a time. The purpose of the grant is to fund adaptations necessary to meet the specific needs of a disabled person in their home, and applying for multiple grants for the same property or project could be considered misuse of the scheme.

However, if the applicant has multiple properties or different needs that require separate adaptations, they may be able to apply for grants for each property or each set of works separately. Each application is assessed on its own merits and eligibility criteria.
