Traveling on plane first time with wheelchair,

I've been using a electric wheelchair for about 8 years, and mainly due to horror stories and generally being able to use boats I've avoided flying with it, I've been able to hire equipment etc on a few holidays so have travelled, I'm just looking for some advice.

I'm traveling with EasyJet its a short flight to London and unfortunately flying is the only way possible,

Could anyone tell me what the process is in terms of checking the wheelchair in ? do I use it to the door and leave it there or do I get a chair when I arrive at the airport and check the chair in at departure gates ?

How is the chair returned to you ? do you get it as you get off the plane or do you have to get it with the returned luggage section ? Is there generally much of a wait ?

My chair is the Mobility+ Instafold so my batteries are removable and chair foldable, should I bring cling film / bubble wrap to protect the chair or is it stored separately ?

I understand many people will have bad experiences, on how this all goes, however I'm more interested in the expected process of what should happen if this makes sense.

Thanks

Hi @Paulww, I'm not a wheelchair user (ex partner was) so I won't be the best person to advise but there are rules relating to the battery type (dry or gel), securing the battery and the dimensions and weight of your wheelchair.

Easyjet will have all the correct information that you will need on their website and the airline's guidance is usually very specific to the airline as well as some advance notice needed as it requires their 'special assistance'.

Others may come along with more guidance than I can give but I'd definitely look at Easyjet's requirements as they'll be very specific to them I expect.

All the very best to you and I hope your trip goes well too.

Hi @paulww and a warm welcome to the community from me!

I don't have first hand experience of this but I do know we have some members on the forum who do use wheelchairs so hopefully they will be able to provide some more firsthand information and experience.

I did find some information on boarding the plane, during your flight and at your destination airport for passengers with reduced mobility. Easyjet also have some information about special assistance that includes a section on travelling with wheelchairs.

I hope those links are useful for you and help you know what you can expect☺️
