Sight loss and relationships

I have progressive sight loss due to an inherited genetic condition.
I met my partner when my sight was better and we are in the process of buying a house together. I have been very worried that my sight loss with negatively impact my partner and our relationship. I grew up in a family with financial uncertainty and worry that if I lose my job due to sight loss my partner will be the sole breadwinner and also have to care for me.

I have told them about my worries and they have said it will be fine but I wonder if I should end the relationship because I don’t want to become a burden to them. I love them very much and would sacrifice anything for them. I wondered if others with disabilities feel like this and how they have overcome it or managed it?

Hi @AccessChampion I completely empathise with how your feeling, especially with what you've said about growing up with uncertainty, it's bound to impact how you feel and cause you worry. I really hope you don't break things off. It sounds like your partner cares about you very much and is in it for the long haul if you're purchasing a house together.

Have you thought about talking to somebody about how you're feeling as you're going through this transition? It might help to get some additional support from someone like a talking therapist, either for yourself or as a couple that just gives you both that extra safe space to share and talk through how you're feeling.
