Is London getting less safe?

Depends what part of London you are referring to.
Central London, while not completely safe AT ALL is relatively safe and you should be fine.

But then the outskirts of London, East London, South London and places like Croydon etc… are awful right now.

    Not ‘safe’ at all.

London has a vast population (obvs).

Whilst most crimes have generally decreased there in the last ten years, the types of crimes which are increasing (violence against the person [up 40%], possession of offensive weapons [23%], sexual offences [75%] and theft from the person [207%]) are most common in heavily populated cities.

I suggest the problem isn't London as such. It's just people making a mess of things!

The plague will also have had a significant impact. All those people locked up together...

Twas ever the way, Shirley? I've travelled a lot in Europe and the only cities people warned me to be careful in were capital cities. Lots of tourists with cash etc and lots of hopeful people looking for it.

was in SW London last week visiting a relative and felt completely ok. Just took the normal precautions. Was brought up in SE London and Croydons always been more problematic. I’m now a country bumpkin so do notice the difference when I go to London. Up there on Monday for a hospital appointment so hope it’s all ok.

I've been living in London continuously for the past 28 years. What I've lately been noticing is an alarming increase of the number of teenagers as young as 14 on bikes and small bags across their shoulders openly selling drugs on the street. They even stop people on the street and ask them whether they're interested in buying their stuff. I even see them in groups.

I spoke to the police and community officers about this issue. All they told me was that they were aware of this.

Otherwise, claiming London is no longer safe and the underground has become a gang land as some politicians are uttering for their own political gains, should not be taken seriously, as it does not reflect the reality on the ground at all.

London is safe if you mind your own business. It has become nicer and cleaner, by the way.

To be honest it’s not a matter if London has grown more unsafe, it’s a case of the whole country has grown unsafe! It’s a systemic issue in many towns, city’s and villages alike. Not enough financial investment in policing over the last 35+ years, police tend to drive one up most of the time, there are less bobbies actually on the beat, PCSO’s have there hands tied behind there backs, nowadays you need a degree to join the force.

Then you have the Herbert’s that are causing all the trouble! No respect, no morals, always wanting to look big and tough, they walk around with masks on in groups picking on innocent people for no good. I’ll be honest it’s because of eejits like this that I’ve not been into the city centre where I’ve lived coming up to six months, heard about folk being arrested with machetes. I’m probably not the only one who because of there mental health has no confidence and doesn’t feel safe going out to the city centre.

There is nothing Great about Britain anymore

No one needs a degree to join the UK police force as a police constable.

No Herbert or eejit should prevent you from living. Don't let them …

As for saying that "there's nothing great about Britain anymore", I invite you to listen to Bob Vylan in this regard - that Britain "has never been lovely".

Stats can be interpreted or published in so many ways, so at to suit the reader or indeed the writer. If a crime rate goes up, it's worth looking at the context of the statistics. Is that just reported crimes? Are they attempting to factor in unreported crimes, and if so how have they opted to do that?

If you measured the percentage of people in the countryside carrying things that may be considered weapons I think it'd dwarf the city. While walking the dog I often pass a guy carrying a shotgun. 😆 I've carried a pocket knife every day for the last 15 years, never got into any trouble and no-one bats an eyelid when I use my knife for stuff openly in shops or while outside or whatever

I wonder if people in cities go round - with some justification - suspecting everyone else all the time? When everyone's cranky perhaps it makes everyone more likely to be a victim of bad stuff or even more likely to do bad stuff?
