First UC payment calculation query

Hi

So my first payment was today of £486.86 that they told me is my award. I must have had HC paid in for September even though they said from 12th October so I guess this has happened.

My query is, is that I used to get £323.50 every fortnight on ESA before migration.

I did tell them I had a little more than the allowed amount and was told I'd get deducted I think £4.35 for every £250 over so I worked it out at around £7.50 I'd lose per week I think it is but this seems more as half of the monthly UC is £234.43 a fortnight compared to £323.50 a fortnight on ESA. I know the months change and aren't exactly 4 weeks but seems quite a drop.

Regards

Are you able to copy the details of your payment statement?

Please ensure any personal details are blacked out.

It's not uncommon for a first statement to be incorrect with a missing element, etc.

    Aha.

It seems you were accidentally paid too much Income Related ESA during the migration process.

They have deducted £323.50 from this UC award to recover the money.

You can check with DWP debt management to see if anything is now outstanding.

There is a phone number on the link, or a new online service.

    https://www.gov.uk/repay-manage-benefit-owed

You aren't financially worse off right now because you've had that £323 extra in ESA payment already.

Once the debt has been repaid your UC award will not have that deduction and will be +323.

That brings you up to £809 a month UC which is the amount for Standard Allowance & LCWRA. As you migrated without SDP you are better off on UC compared to your previous ESA award of approximately £700 per month.

Ah OK, I recall getting 2 ESA payments after I sent the online form off whereas I only expected 1. I got that on the day of my biographical phone call so maybe that is it.

So next month's payment will be how it will be in future months despite me being at the time I filled the form in being a bit over the 6k threshold

    Many thanks

They've made a £13.05 deduction for your savings. That will continue as long as your money is over £6000.

With your savings deduction I'd expect an award of £796 once the ESA debt has been repaid.

So the esa in total has been repaid in full now yes?

It's strange that I got that payment but they are different departments I guess.. Maybe because it took longer than usual so I got an extra on, is that it

Many thanks for your help. I'll await next month to see what happens.

    . Regards

As advised you'd need to check with DWP debt management to make sure the debt is now cleared.

Sometimes the process doesn't work quite as intended and people end up being paid too much from legacy benefits after claiming UC.

@Kimi87 apparently my local city council has paid too much HB too so that has to be repaid out of next payment however is that my fault I dunno. As in it goes straight to landlord from my local council. 🤔
