Is anyone else scared that the Ukraine war is going to expand and turn into WW3 ?

I am convinced that Putin is absolutely insane and nothing (Trump or Chinese influence) is going to stop him……

I can't imagine enough countries agreeing nowadays to make a world war again.

Something will stop Putin eventually. But I don't think it'll be Trump.

We had lots of lectures on WW3 back in the cold war days and I remember one expert saying that even if WW3 did start then it dosen't have to go nuclear.

The danger point will probably be if China and Taiwan kick off, that could be next the next thing to happen.

I don't think that China is a worry - they need the west for sales !

I think that N Korea could cause problems though - they are run by another madman who would love to bring USA in to a war !

So did I - I remember "duck and cover" - getting under school desks in case of a bomb - not that that would have helped any………..

I remember watching a late night BBC discussion programme in the late 1990s. They were discussing their thoughts on what the 21st century would be like. The one that stuck in my mind was the retired univesity lecturer, can't remember his name. He said fear is the only weapon goverments have and he believed it would be used with powerful effect. Sure enough, since the dwning of 2000, we've had no end of scary news stories. Everything from Russian spies posioning people, avian flu, the return of foot and mouth, Sars, Covid, terrorism attacks and goodness knows what else.

No, I'm not scared because I know, behind the scenes, these politicians are all talking to each other, making deals, working out who gets the contracts to rebuild ruined cities etc.

No, I was a teenager in the 80s so the threat of nuclear war was more then. We were doing about it at school. Plus seeing threads on tv , made it scary. It's on I player. Even the bands made songs about it like Frankie goes to Hollywood, Ultravox, Duran Duran etc

There was film that came out in about 1983 called "Threads" about the UK in a nuclear war.

It was quite a big thing at that time and I think the government banned it or tried to.

It shows how seriously things were taken back in the cold war era.

In the 80s, I was young/newly married. My (then) husband and I had the quickest route worked out from his workplace to my workplace. Our plan was to run as fast as we could towards each other in the hope we'd meet before being vapourised.

Now, I'm quite fortunate in that a) I'm old, and b) I live in close proximity to a nuclear arsenal here in Scotland. So, I'll be instantly crispy when the first missle lands.

So, now, if/when the warning comes, I'll just open a bottle of nice vodka and drink it until it and I evaporate.

Having watched so many documentaries/movies on the topic, the very last thing I'd want is to survive a nuclear attack. ::shudder::

FWIW, I think it will kick off due to Israel nuking Iran, and escalate from there.

I’m in the generation that was shown ‘Threads’ at school. It terrified us all. I re-watched it not long ago and it still had a huge impact on me.

I was 19 back in 1984, I remember it being spoken about on TV political shows and on the TV news that time.

I never knew about it being shown in schools though, that's surprised me especially showing it to 10 year olds.

Russia having 3 leaders all die in the space of about 4 years in the early 1980's probably made things worse as well, people never knew what sort of leader would take over.

They actually had 4 different leaders in the 1980's.

As with most 'conflicts' nowadays, they will probably solve it by doing 'deals,' underhand or otherwise, the same as in Ukraine hopefully sooner rather than later. Putin should be put on trial for war crimes, but will he be? I seriously doubt it, totally different to the world in the 40's when Hitler, who you could compare Putin to? Would have been if he hadn't killed himself in his bunker, unless of course you believe in the conspiracy theories surrounding all that…..

Gorbachev was their 4th leader in about 5 years at that time.

That's if my memories right !!

Netanyahu and Jong-Un and to a lesser extent Xi-Jinping as well - I don't trust any of them.
