Part Two - Claudia Jones

October is Black History Month in the UK and this is a time to recognise, celebrate and reflect on the rich history, achievements and contributions of Black people across the country.

Black History Month began in the United States in February 1970. It was created to honour the often overlooked contributions of Black Americans. Inspired by its impact, Black British community leaders introduced Black History Month to the UK in 1987 as part of the African Jubilee Year celebrations.

Since then, every October has served as a powerful reminder of the influence and importance of Black people throughout history. From the Windrush Generation to today’s artists, educators, scientists, political leaders and changemakers.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing posts that highlight Black disabled people, people whose stories and impact often go unrecognised in mainstream media.

Their experiences matter and their voices are an important part of both Black history and disability history.

By focusing on the intersection of race and disability, I hope to bring more visibility to these voices, open up conversations and celebrate the strength and diversity within the communities!
