IBS and fizzy drinks?

Does anyone else have a link between not being on medication for IBS and notice IBS pain can be felt with bloating? If im on medication this seems to be managed more. Seems a nit early to tell a few days though. I have always had stomach issues but never from fizzy drinks.

following a gallbladder surgery from hell I’m left with ibs like symptoms. I used to drink a lot of fizzy drinks, but have found they do cause bloating now. Also bread is a massive trigger my stomach literally blew up last week causing hernias, and stomach to pop out so bad it was noticeable to others and affected my breathing too. Surgeon’s just washed their hands and said to work out my personal triggers. I agree fizzy drinks are now a treat, not a daily thing. Also not great for the bladder (according to my urologist - at least that wasn’t caused by the gallbladder surgery 😂).

    @JennieWren

I have to admit "my stomach literally blew up last week causing hernias" made me smile

I'm one of those people that frowns when people use the word "literally" as it's almost always never literal but then had to go back on my presumption 😳

I take one prescription and one non prescription medication daily to control my day to day symptoms, and reduce flare ups.

Like most people my triggers make no sense - I can eat a massive salad and be absolutely fine.

Yet if I have one spoon too many of peas, sweetcorn, a cooked carrot that is too big, I get symptoms. Four tablespoons is my limit.

I'm even rationed to one mini cob corn, definitely can't have two 😂

I've also recently developed an intolerance to Rhoddas Clotted Cream, which everywhere serves 🙁

I'd be happy to road test another brand but that's proved impossible.

Oh and earlier in the year I realised white bread I needed to cut out. I now have one serving maybe 3-4 times a year, with extra meds and not needing to go out the next day.

Taking my own brown rolls to BBQs worked well, took ages to find something the right shape for sausages, didn't want to use a burger bun which wouldn't allow me to have the full BBQ experience!

sorry to hear that i wish i read that before eating three donoughts because i missed breakfast i was feeling faint. I have stayed away now from them three days and less niggling? so i might stop them altogether and make sure i dont eat doughnuts (full of flower and sugar)!

You take one medication for day to day? i took peppermint capsules but i cant take longterm? I thought flare ups was a flareup? im worried also if i take long term it would hide maybe serious symptoms? But im 75% sure my niggling pain is related to stress because my stools are not black etc. Sometimes i wish this was a specific diagnosis and would make anxiety less rather than feel less in control.

I've been extensively tested for IBD several times, as my symptoms don't fit IBS.

Even when my Mum was diagnosed with IBD I didn't go back, as I won't put myself through the tests again unless I'm massively symptomatic. Didn't see Mum's diagnosis would change anything for me personally.

    I don't take peppermint oil.

The prescription medication was meant as temporary to stop night time flare ups, as it also worked really well on my day to day symptoms I asked to stay on it at a lower dose, which I increase if having a bad day.

The non prescription one I decided myself to start this year, my normal day to day bowel movements were becoming troublesome and this helps to improve them, while still maintaining them happening as is normal for me (1-3 times each morning).

Had I seen a major change as a result of the OTC medication, I would have consulted GP to decide upon the best way forward.

It's very simple but I found a few weeks of writing down a diary of my symptoms + food/drink intake really helped me clarify early this year that I needed to give up white bread.

Yh im doing a diary now. Im now gonna cut out doughnuts no matter if i dont have food in house. Im getting bloating and flatuence. I did used to eat junk food alot unable to take care of self and drink and have mild symptoms on off but now food seems to trigger it?

I have had iced peach tea last few days because it has been with meal deal. I havent noticed any imporvements. I did choose it because it isnt fizzy i thought thats better. I ate a doughnut today but i had discomfort before im desperate for energy boost. Im taking peppermint again and see if this subsides over weekend. Do you try peach tea regularly or just the once? i was going to try herbal teas as they have either less or 0 caffiene. I still need a weak coffee in morning to function than cold turkey.
