Diwali 2025 ✨😄
Diwali is a time of celebration and spiritual significance for millions around the world and this year the main festivities will take place today, Monday 20th October.
Diwali (also known as Deepavali) symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists and they have their own unique traditions and historical significance.
The celebrations of Diwali take place over five days and each day has its own special meaning and rituals..
Day 1: Dhanteras – Saturday 18th October 2025
The festival begins with Dhanteras and this is a day seen as favourable for new beginnings and prosperity. Many people purchase gold, silver or new utensils for their homes and light lamps to welcome wealth and good fortune.
Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) – Sunday,19th October 2025
This day is known as "small Diwali" and commemorates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura, signifying the defeat of evil. Homes are decorated and diyas (oil lamps_ are burned in the evening.
Day 3: Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) - Monday 20th October 2025
This is the main day of Diwali. Families gather to perform the Lakshmi Puja, a prayer ceremony dedicated to the goddess of wealth and prosperity (Lakshmi) and the remover of obstacles (Lord Ganesha). Homes and streets are decorated with rows of lights and colourful patterns.
Day 4: Govardhan Puja – Tuesday 21st October 2025
This day is dedicated to celebrating the legend of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers from torrential rains. In many households, a small mountain of food is prepared to symbolise the hill.
Day 5: Bhai Dooj – Wednesday 22nd October 2025
This day honours the special bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for their brothers long and happy lives, and brothers offer gifts and promise to protect their sisters.
The stories and traditions of Diwali vary but it is universally seen as a time for joy, reflection and community. Diwali is a celebration of new beginnings, the importance of family and the enduring power of light and goodness.
