Today we are celebrating international day of persons with disabilities! The day is about promoting the rights and wellbeing of those with disabilities and raising awareness of the issues that disabled people face.

2025 Theme

This year's theme is 'fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress'. The 3 core themes of social development are:

  1. Poverty eradication - Those with disabilities are more likely to live in poverty
  2. Promotion of employment for all - They face discrimination in employment and receive lower wages
  3. Social integration - There are continued issues with respecting dignity, autonomy, and agency when receiving healthcare and support

The day also serves as a platform for launching new initiatives and policies aimed at improving the lives of disabled people. Governments and organisations often use this day to announce commitments to enhancing accessibility, promoting inclusive education, and supporting employment opportunities for disabled people

Despite the progress made, significant challenges remain. Many disabled people still face barriers to accessing education, employment, and healthcare. Discrimination and stigma persist, highlighting the need for continued advocacy and action. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a call to address these issues, ensuring that disabled people can live with dignity and equality.

What do you think of this year's theme?

What do you think of this year's theme?

I think the theme is dreadfully disappointing because there is absolutely no new information here, and therefore it smacks of being condescending and dismissive. This is just recycled information that has gone on for decades now. Because there are no new ideas, the theme has no teeth. What might be more topical is this same theme in the context of a global financial crisis.

Do you relate to any of these issues mentioned?

Yes. All of them, if not now then previously and maybe also in the future.
