I totally agree, as only my native Ireland is worse by comparison to the U.K. - the Maid programme in Canada is a huge worry that it could be implemented here - only North Korea is worse than the CCP and yet our leaders seem to want to copy both of these regimes - our world has become worse since 2020 and even more so since 2022, where since then it has become too dangerous for me to visit family in Ireland in person anymore

how has it become more dangerous in Ireland? Ireland is much more stable politically and economically, in part because it's an EU member state with proportional represenation.

I was more alarmed by the 'North Korea' bit myself. Hyperbole helps nobody.

I'm sorry you feel that way Catherine21

I'm not aware of anything either planned or enacted by the government which would meaningfully change my rights.

A lot is written and said (particularly in the media) about rights. I blame the current political climate and the showboating of certain politicians (and their wannabes!). The media are there to make money, and human nature leaves us disproportionately interested in shocking or upsetting news. They'll sell the most adverts by telling us all the worst that goes on, so that's what they do. Good news TV channels have been tried and they've never succeeded.

I suggest the government isn't a corporation. At best it would have to be a mixture of corporations because the various parties represented in parliament can't (or just won't) agree with one other. That's how governments have always been, everywhere they exist. Money is power and vice-versa.

The King holds the Crown Estate as a "corporation sole," meaning the properties and holdings belong to him by virtue of his public office, not as a private individual. They're only his as long as he does his (awful) job. I wouldn't do it if they paid me his wages.

Farage likely won't become powerful enough to enact any of his crazy rhetoric. If the people of this country are frankly dumb enough to elect him, that's a lesson they should learn. Most of the reformers who've been elected have proven themselves inadequate for their jobs. Unfortunately that's democracy for us!

All things considered, in my opinion this country's not doing badly. Considering the complexities of international politics right now, and that we've just survived a plague/financial crashes etc, etc, things could very easily be considerably worse. And they aren't!

I don't ever worry, it's pointless and unhealthy. If you asked, I'd encourage you to find more positive things to read, watch, see, listen to, and all that. There's loads of lovely stuff and pleasant people out here, there and everywhere.

We'll most likely be alright. Well, I suppose we'll probably all be dead at some stage, but that's the only thing we can't change if we want to enough!

    Good luck

    😺

It was sunak speech sick note Britain end of 2023 that I ever ever paid attention to politics and everyday since then ive been consumed im so scared its the end of the world but all the things labour bringing in are dystopian I have no trust in them ignorance is bliss im trying to really disconnect then I hear something else and im back in fear loop 😢

To quote a forensic pathologist I spoke to earlier, "Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence".

Unfortunately that's much how fear works. If we try to ignore it by pushing it away, it'll likely continue to scare us.

We sometimes can't change some of the circumstances we live in, the things that others do.

We can control how those things affect us, particularly how they make us feel.

I'm well aware that it's much easier for some people than for others and that anxiety can be all sorts of complicated to deal with. In my experience however (and that of various friends/relatives) it can be done.

If you last engaged with politics in 2023, how do you know what Labour are doing? Social Media? I never believe a word of it without careful checking and evidence.

Please don't worry, it can't help in any way.

We'll be alright in the (reasonably!) long run.

    😺

I think @Littlefatfriend has made some really good points. Remember not to read too much into things @Catherine21.

You're very far from alone in finding yourself where you are/have been right now Catherine21

A form of group hysteria is being brewed by proxy of both social and mainstream media. They want to scare us into watching their tales of woe and impending doom because then they can sell us adverts, subscriptions etc.

    That's where we've got.

Conspiracy theorists can easily argue that it and we are all being controlled by governments, by the rich, by secret groups of all sorts with hidden agendas to rule the world. But they can never find reliable evidence of any of it. Not that would stand up to any real interrogation.

This is just how capitalism currently works.

Sorry if I repeat myself but they're just selling adverts, newspapers, etc…

My niece and nephew have had (and continue to have) completely different lives to anything I've experienced. The world has changed enormously since I was young. But their (and their contemporaries') alternative perspectives have great potential to work out what the country and all the rest need.

We're marvelous creatures and we've certainly dealt with similarly difficult things in the past!

I'm very pleased if I may help and other people invevitably have other opinions, good luck

    😇

I do believe that a high percentage of media reports are overly dramatic and when you really look at them they are probably nowhere near as scary as they appear/never likely to actually happen. I totally get how scary they look though!

I also think a lot of politician BS is exactly that and many of the things that they say they may do would never ever get through the commons and lords and actually become law. I think politicians stay relevant and papers make money from drama that scares people. It drives me mad!

Apprently Canada now ask people who have autism if they want to die.

@rubin16 could you share your source for that please?

The information I found is that you must be at least 18 years old and have 'a grievous and ireemediable medical condition'.

'Eligibility for MAID for persons suffering solely from a mental illness has been delayed until March 17, 2027'.

I think the person in question had other conditions as well as being autistic and was a unique case that was allowed

I appreciate you checking your sources and sending the links @rubin16. Just to clarify, they are still considering whether to allow those with mental health conditions to apply for MAID, therefore they are not asking those with autism and ADHD if they would like to be euthanised.

@Catherine21 Here is an article that you may be interested in https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/13/canada-medical-assisted-death The woman in question had other conditions and the Drs found that she had 'undiagnosed mental health issues' which they believe contributed to her willingness to apply for MAID. She did not apply based solely on mental health issues.

I urge everyone to double-check your sources and read articles carefully as it can cause panic when things are quoted incorrectly and out of context.
