Parliament later today is debating Digital ID cards, after nearly three million people signed a petition against them. The debate starts at 4.30 pm. It’ll be interesting to see how many MPs join in.

Catherine, the debate yesterday was lively. Ministers kept saying digital IDs would cut fraud and make everyday things simpler.

But MPs speaking for their constituents were firmly on our side.  They raised the same worries we have all voiced about privacy, hacking, and whether anyone really wants their phone to become a tracking device. They also made the point that people without smartphones, or those who struggle to use them, would be cut off from support altogether.

With nearly three million signatures against, it was made crystal clear to the Westminster Hall panel that voters do not trust the government with their data.

On Trump, I have not seen anything solid about him “cutting ties” with the UK in 2027. It is more that commentators expect a bumpier relationship, not a break. Headlines love drama, but the real issue for us is here at home.

Our own government needs to get trust and safeguards right, whether on cameras, IDs, or wider protections for disabled people which are slowly being eroded by this government. That is where our voices matter most.  And with the Timms report on disability coming next year, I think we will need all our energy focused here.

People without smart phones or struggle to use them are already are cut off from the world we live in now.

The world has gone online and cash less almost, even paying bills is made easier /encouraged to just do it online or via the apps. Some companies charge more to send you a paper bill.

Our phones already track us with the masts, data is already at risk from hackers and it won't cut fraud. Anyone buying something with a card or online is leaving a trail. I don't want digital ID because it's one more thing open to abuse, hacking, crashing and going wrong.

I'm not sure this is a good topic for the scope community, but since it was started and I do have a view on it, I thought I'd just say that digital I.D. could have been helpful if it were in the hands of trustworthy people, but to be honest, I don't trust them and so signed the petition to debate the idea of digital I.D. I don't think it is necessary and is dangerous to liberty if the controlling bodies decide to use it against the public for the purposes of quashing dissenting voices over government dictatorship. There I said is without insulting a single individual or race!

    @Catherine21

Catherine, like you I worry about this Government’s overreach, and I share Rachael Maskell’s views on this.

Here is a quote from the Hansard report of what Rachael Maskell, Labour and Co‑operative MP, said: “If DWP data and NHS data are in the wrong hands, social security will become insecurity… Parliament needs to wake up to the reality that it is not about what is on our phone, but about the data behind that and how it will be misused in future.”

Rachel also pointed out the huge money interests circling this project, big tech firms and insurance companies eager to profit from our data. That’s why she urged Parliament to stop before it exposes people’s health, finances and security to misuse.

I am sure that the younger generation will be in favor of digital identity. I was reading that you can upload your passport etc into a UK Government app and once that you are confirmed as you this app can be used to prove your age for night clubs and purchasing alcohol. Let’s face most young people have their life on their phones.

That's the problem, compliance through convenience. Pure laziness could inadvertently aid this rubbish making it into reality.

I've seen it before as a physical media collector, netflix et al is more convenient to the average person than looking through a shelf and walking to a Blu-ray player, it doesn't matter that even all streaming services combined have less than 30% of titles available on disc it's easier to press a couple of buttons on a remote and now physical media is always in limited editions and niche.

cash is fading out now for the convenience of credit and bank cards, we must not let a dangerous thing like digital ID slip by because of pure convenience.

I do not have any social media.

    Voxi £10 pm

I was traced or rather triangulated by my phone about nine years ago while I was in Africa. Not bad for third world and all over a 32mph speeding ticket from the UK that was unpaid. The the police emailed the business registered to that same address looking for me.

Soon you will need to show identification to purchase a pay and go sim. Notice how those companies all want us to use their apps that track our spending and where we are.

Alexa and google plus Apple also collect data on their voice speakers.
Have a hunt on the internet regarding smart tvs and see what they tell companies about you. Maybe even the bbc.

Cannot recall how many databases we are on once we have a driving licence. It’s a lot.

If you have Facebook and or a smart phone. Notice how it always knows what you are looking for. Does it listen I wonder.

4G is still working on old mobiles and old mobiles cannot download apps, so use your old mobile or buy one off ebay. I'll use my iPhone 5s, although it's smaller, it is more convenient in the pocket. I've not seen where it is enforceable yet to have it, but I have a driving licence and that's all I'm having.
