Help Finding Suitable Accomodation?

Hi,

I haven't been able to find any help with this so far but just want to check I'm not missing anything as I'm desperate to move now. My current property is causing damage to my health and also preventing any improvement.

I keep checking the national websites for private rentals and I keep checking the local Housing Association for social rentals. My requirements are very restrictive unfortunately (largely due to having been trapped here too long with a constant health & ability decline!) so I rarely find anything suitable at all, and on the rare occasion I do find something, I'm not allowed to rent it for one reason or another.

I'm basically looking for a service like 'Kirstie & Phil' or 'Escape to the Country' but without a TV crew. Does that actually exist at all?

Thanks

Hi @OverlyAnxious it sounds like you're doing the right thing. I presume you've raised the health damages to your landlord? Hopefully they're looking in to how to resolve that for you. I've found this quite helpful if you're in social housing about raising complaints - Social housing tenants

Have you thought about the possibility of a disability facility grant to support with adjustments to your current or future home as an option to help make it comfortable for you? You can read more about them here - Disabled Facilities Grants: Overview - GOV.UK

I hope you're able to get something sorted soon.

Thanks Holly. Unfortunately I'm in private rental and one of the main issues is a communal stairwell. There's nothing anyone can do to remove that, so moving to a ground floor property is the only realistic option. Reluctantly I did ask the landlord for some repairs this year, and I had to pay thousands of pounds for alternative accommodation while the repairs were done, but because I couldn't choose the parts or the contractors, I've ended up with an even less accessible property now. Even if all the work had been done properly though, this property is just too small and on the wrong level, so moving has been the only realistic option for making health improvements for the last 5 years.

Have you tried looking for local housing support organisations?

    (I'm not talking about HA's)

Thanks Kimi. I hadn't looked through that site for housing support. It sounds like that is the type of service I'm looking for. However, having just checked, there don't appear to be any in my area, just the general Citizens Advice places. It was definitely worth a try though!

Oh, that's awful @OverlyAnxious. I'm so sorry that you've had to go through all of this. I've got everything crossed that something better comes about for you in the new year.

    Have you tried Shelter?

I know they work alot with homelessness, however do overall support with most housing situations and may be able to point you in the right direction.

Hope you manage to find something more suitable soon though.

I wish I could help, but unfortunately no experience of your situation. I genuinely hope you get a more suitable property in the near future! Best wishes for the future.
