Catherine, is your council actually due elections this year? Ours is not. We last voted in 2023, so we are not due to vote again until 2027.

The plan to postpone some elections is being challenged in the High Court next month through a judicial review, and the court has put a temporary stop on the Government changing any election dates until the hearing.

Most councils that are due elections are still going ahead as normal.

We were one of the 9 areas postponed last year to 2026, and they've asked for a second postponement this year 🙁

I'm very glad to read that is being challenged in the courts.

That must feel incredibly frustrating, Kimi. Being postponed once is hard enough, but having your area pushed back a second time really is a lot for residents to deal with.

My own area went through a major merger of three boroughs into one about seven years ago, and it was a huge piece of reorganisation work. Even so, our local elections were never cancelled or delayed and everything still took place on the usual timetable while the merger was happening.

I’m not surprised you are relieved to see it being challenged in the courts. It’s important that someone tests whether these delays are actually justified.

This is good to hear it's being challenged @Kimi87

We're having the big Senedd Elections here in May and I think a lot of people are very nervous about what the outcome will be!

@Catherine21 , the judge is not looking at politics at all. In a judicial review they only check one thing. Did the Government follow the law when it delayed those elections. That is it. Not who they agree with and not who they like. Just whether the right legal process was used.

If the court finds the law was not followed, the postponement is cancelled and the elections have to go ahead.

The Government could try to change the law, but that would need a full Act of Parliament. That takes time and debates, so it would not happen before the May elections.

Yes, Catherine, the hearing is set for two days over the 19 and 20 February. Any decision will be known well before the May elections, so everyone will have plenty of notice.

The local election for my area is in May, at this point I don't know who to vote for. I think its going to be either Green Party or Lib Dems who I choose can't trust any of the others. Cons, Labour and Reform are all out for me and never again.

I think Labour cancelled local elections this year because they know they're going to do very badly. They've broken a lot of their promises and done stuff they did not say before and made life harder for many people.
