We use to have a coal fire and I miss it terribly. Two fires downstairs and one upstairs, that use to keep the house nice and dry. But we changed it for a modern gas fire and central heating, now my sinuses are always blocked and we have damp in certain places.

As long as I can get down to light it its staying. Its paid for itself many times over the 30 years since I got it. Like you say "no damp" โฆand it dries washing in an hour or so. Fuel is paid for up front so no nasty bills. My only regret is I should have put in a back boiler with it, but I couldn't afford it at the time and now it would be too much disruption.

That sounds really good. But you have no heating upstairs at all? Saying that I don't have my heating on when I go to bed at night. I rely on my electric throw when it's really cold, which is often in the winter as my bedroom is in the attic! Then it's the fan in the summer as it's too hot! Can't win.

I have radiators throughout the house but I rarely use them. I dont like a warm bedroom and the window is nearly always open. I put them on from time to time just to circulate the water but only for an hour or so. We are made of tough stuff 'up north'

We only had one coal fire the others were boarded up and a parafin heater for the kitchen. We later had coal central heating, a Parkray.
Have you tried using a dehumidifier for the damp?

They already have to some extent. They are in what was WHSmiths, now TG Jones.

I've heard that, but they always say you can't reheat for souffle

We can funnily enough..we have one of those funny laws here. On the new build across the main rd, I say new build. The estate has been their since the 1950s, they can't have a coal fire, but we live the other side of the main rd and we can. And this was an huge mining area.
