What gets me though is that this is the UK, it's not like America where they have a "Sue or get sued" culture.

Some people don't seem to care or even know the difference 😏

Completely agree, well said; to me, it's irrelevant if somebody has for instance, 8,000 or 80 posts or good grammar/spelling etc. What's relevant is the unique experience and perspective that each individual brings. Kindness and empathy surpasses everything else imo.

I agree with a lot of what you said @willow1, people seem to look for offence sometimes!! But 'freedom of speech' is about government censorship, not about being able to say what you like anywhere, most forums like Reddit/MSE etc are private organisations and can refuse to host whatever they like πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

People use 'freedom of speech' a lot but it doesn't really mean what people seem to think it does

Like I've said before, freedom of speech only goes so far, there's still stuff that can't be said because certain groups don't like it…. I am of course referring to the recent racial slurs uttered at the BAFTA Ceremony last weekend.

Hi @willow1. We have a word filter to comply with the Online Safety Act. The word in question has a second, derogatory meaning which is why it is filtered automatically.

Sometimes it not how you say things, it's more like where you say things and when. TV in the 70s were very different to now, things didn't seem to offend people that much then, but as we progress with groups of people of a younger age who don't like how things were describe in those days. It's up to the individual to what he or she likes and they shouldn't be dictated to by groups of people who don't like what they're are watching or saying..

I think it's the rise of social media that's ballooned all this offended lark.

I sometimes think it is not what you say, it is not how you say it, it is how you make the other person feel that is the problem.

I had a friend (sadly passed away now) she used to call me something that is probably on the censor list here, it never bothered me, never offended me, but my sister heard her call me it one day & was disgusted, that made me laugh, which didn't help, she didn't actually say anything to her but did to me later. It was something between friends, she would never say it to anyone else & it is the way you say something & who to. If you called out to a stranger in the street it would be nasty & offensive.

As for freedom of speech, I think it has gone too far, nobody knows what's right or wrong as it keeps changing so fast & some things are just too ridiculous for words. I do think social media has a lot to do with it & that is why I don't go on any, this is it!

I think you've kind of proven my point, 'freedom of speech' is not about what it is or means to you as an invidual, or what people WANT it to mean, it's a legal definition and doesn't at all mean we can all legally say whatever we like, whereever we want to, however we fancy

I absolutely agree people should be able to speak their mind and not have to worry how someone else is judging their tone (because that's all subjective anyway!! like if a friend says something I will take it completely differently to if a stranger does)

I agree and think policital correctness can (and in some cases HAS) gone too far, but I don't think manners and politeness are an issue?? In fact I think they're pretty important? Why do you think they're about control?
