Council tax
hello all. Hope you’re having a nice Sunday. Dad has dementia and is getting higher rate attendance allowance. I reduced hours at work to 4 hours, I am his registered carer. Mum has severe lung condition and gets lower rate pip. We all live together and I care for both, but applied as my dad’s carer. That runs out this year, so I’m sure I’ll be back here asking for advice.
But today, I didn’t apply for reduced council tax until now. I thought we weren’t applicable. Now I think we are. My council asked for aa and carer proof, I’ve given it. They haven’t even asked about mum, but will we get a discount, and could we get more if I ring them up to tell them about mum? They just don’t give an option for any more info. Does anyone know how this is calculated? Online, it’s just limited and confusing. Thanks in advance.

*my dads aa is unlimited. Mums pip runs out this year. Sorry if that was unclear

Hi @BuzzerButton, unfortunately it's quite hard to say what kind of reduction you'd get for your circumstances as councils all have slightly different rules on this.
It may be worth giving them a ring to explain all the details and see if they can advise you further on what kind of reduction you might be eligible for.
Sorry that I can't be of more help, but I hope you can get it sorted!

thanks Rosie. I was caring for both before & looked into council tax, and wasn’t eligible. When I became their carer, I looked, but under my dad, not as a carer. Again, receiving help seems to be a minefield. I’ve got a reference number now & will give them a call. Hate speaking on the phone. Thanks again.
