Just found this Dave. Looks like you can, as long as you inform DVLA

My friend has schizophrenia. I know he can't drive due to the meds he's on. Can't remember what they're called. Zo something?

As you handed it in voluntarily it looks to me that at most you might need your GP to approve you as medically fit. I think handing it in was likely a good idea.
That's where I'd start, by asking your GP if they'd do that. They'll know all about any potential drugs issues and alternative drugs may be available.
Then it's pretty much just a D1 or M1 form from the DVLA.
I'm certainly not an expert, this is just advice.
Good luck

When I lost my licence, I had to do a driving assessment before getting back a restricted car licence (3 years automatic).

thanks for the info everyone
what is a driving assessment? a driving test again?

I went to the local testing centre, and went for a drive with a driving assessor from the DSA. It was more informal than a driving test, but he still marked things down, and gave me a pass paper at the end.

My GP ( whoever they are, never met them) had nothing to do with it. My assessment was conducted by a DSA assessor, then the restricted licence was granted by the DVLA. ( 3 years, restricted to automatic).
