Just been diagnosed with ADHD

I've just had a video call assessment with HealthHarmonie Minds. She said something like I have combined ADHD in that I'm something like hyperactive, inattentive, impulsive, and possibly something else, I can't remember exactly, but they should eventually email me with all of the details.

As I am really, really struggling in life I was so worried that I would not get diagnosed, as I've tried everything else and none of it has worked (therapy several times, CBT, anti depressants, self help, hypnosis, etc). But now that I've been diagnosed I can finally get the help that I desperately need. I'm obviously very pleased but I've not had the chance to just sit back and let it all sink in yet.

In the best possible way, I'm so pleased that you have had your ADHD diagnosis confirmed @Ross1975 . I think getting a diagnosis, even if expected, still does take some time to sink in.

I do hope that you get the help that you need (couldn't happen to a nicer person).

Thanks chiarieds that's really nice of you. I've just had one of those moments where I genuinely thought 'Wait a minute, I've not just dreamt this have I?'. Nope, I haven't, it's real. For the last few months I've felt like I've been living on a knife edge.

    Hi @Ross1975

How are you feeling today? A diagnosis can be quite overwhelming so please don't be harsh on yourself if it takes a while to sink in and process. Hopefully you will be able to get the right help for yourself now😊

Hi, Mary, it has sunk in a lot more and I feel absolutely great, I've not felt this good for years.

I've just realised how quick all of this has been, I've heard some people have to wait years. From seeing the doctor on the 15th Dec about how I suspect I have ADHD and so I'd like to be assessed, to being diagnosed on the 25th of Feb has just taken 2 months, a week, and three days!

I kind of feel like a different person, like a new person. When I look back at myself when I was a kid I feel like I'm looking at a different person as well. Until around a year ago I don't think it had ever crossed my mind that I have ADHD and have had it all my life, I guess I thought that ADHD just means you're bouncing around every where all the time and that you're really easily distracted and forget about what you're doing (like that scene in The Simpsons where Homer is doing a chore, see's a pretty bird through the window and goes 'Oh, look, a pretty bird!' and runs outside and starts chasing it everywhere) and that's not me, I'm more like a slow moving sloth and don't get really easily distracted by things externally (but I do get very easily distracted internally by my own thoughts but had never really thought about this), and had no idea that there is so much more to ADHD, and that a lot of symptoms that I experience and have always experienced are actually ADHD. I had always thought that I was different from most other people, but that made me strongly suspect that I was autistic, yet a couple of therapists years ago told me there's absolutely no way you're autistic, plus during my assessment B the assessor gave me an autism test and I only scored 2 out of 10.
