I've been doing volunteer work since 1994 though, so to be honest, I wanna work, but I'd rather get paid for it.

However, due to rampant disability discrimination, I can't get a job despite 30 odd years of experience in retail (Charity shops) and various Admin roles.

What do you guys think?

That's a tough one @SheffieldMan1976!

While I realise you'd much rather get paid than volunteer, do you enjoy the voluntary work that you've done? Do you find it helps you to have the structure or routine in your week?

I know the main objective would be to find something paid eventually, but if you enjoy volunteering then it can be a good way to keep yourself busy, get out of the house (if you like that!) and keep your work skills up.

It's because they can't directly put you in a paid role even though realistically that's what the majority of long-term volunteers want.

Volunteering is just not sustainable long term. Even if you enjoy it, you're not being paid what you need to survive under capitalism. Fulfillment only gets you so far. At worst, it's exploitation.

Yeah but in some cases it's the only way a disabled person will ever work, due to right wing employers who won't take us on in a "proper" job.

The majority of employers are not right-wing, though. Ableism exists across the political spectrum.
