Taking away carers allowance?

Help desperately needed!

My carer isn’t caring at all and never has or will, I think he thinks that carers allowance is for caring about someone! As a result our home is in a terrible condition, its filthy, cluttered and almost everything needs replacing (carpets, furniture etc) he’s not even doing the basics, washing clothes or floors or anything, and never has. So if I can’t do it then it doesn’t get done.

He originally claimed carers allowance because he is totally incapable of dealing with the DWP himself (whole long separate story) so I claimed income based ESA for us both and so he wouldn’t have to be assessed for this he claimed carers allowance and this is deducted from our ESA.

Unfortunately he has now been diagnosed with an incurable cancer and although he is well enough and the chemotherapy is suppressing the cancer and he’s not about to pass away I would like to stop the carers allowance and get direct payments to pay for a the care I need but I need to know how to do this without him knowing I did it, I’ve been seen by a social worker for assessment of my care needs and wondered if I could call the DWP stop the carers and just say that adult social care have told me it was going to be stopped without him getting any written material from the DWP?

Hi @gussiefinknottle1, Sorry to hear about your situation and your husband's cancer diagnosis, that all sounds very difficult to navigate. It's not nice that you haven't been getting the help you need to keep your home comfortable. We have sent you an email today, so please look out for that.

The DWP would usually send a letter to confirm the end of a claim, so it may be a little difficult to bring this to an close without something being sent out to him. Do you feel you'd be at risk should a letter come through about it?

It may be worth getting in touch with Social Care again to see if they can help support or advise you with the best way forward.

You might also like to speak to a benefits adviser in case they have any more insight about whether this might be possible. Turn2Us have a search tool here: https://advicefinder.turn2us.org.uk/

Hope you're able to find the best solution for you soon.
