Hi,

I’m 20 years old and struggling to make friends. I used to socialize with people at work, but I had to stop working due to HEDS, which has caused severe mobility issues. I really want to make friends who understand what it’s like to live with a disability.

I’ve been trying to find support groups or similar communities, but I would appreciate any advice on how to make friends. I feel a little silly asking for help with making friends at 20, but I’m genuinely finding it difficult.

Thank you in advance for any support or suggestions.

Hi, 23 here! I'm sorry you're struggling with friends. Having a disability can feel quite isolating. I'm sure other people could pitch in some ideas but I feel the same way. So if it helps you're not on your own. I know that doesn't reduce the pain of loneliness unfortunately but keep strong.

Hi @Darkdestiny. I'm sorry you're struggling to make friends. It can be really tough as an adult. Are there any local groups that you could join? Do you have any interests or hobbies? You could join an online group to chat about them.

Getting involved in chats here will help you find some connections. The Coffee Lounge is great for general chit chat 😊

It's quite common to struggle to make friends as an adult. The structures we had at school just aren't there as adults.

Are you able to travel further afield to events/groups? You said you've got mobility issues, but if you have a car or access to public transport/a driver, they may be viable.

as you're 20, there are local and national social orgs and services aimed at young people. would be worth inquiring with them.

Hello @Darkdestiny, I'm sorry you're struggling, it can be hard to make friends when you have these changes in your life.

Have you heard of themix.org ? They have support groups and Discussion Boards and help people from the ages of 13 to 25. This may help give you some more ideas too, as well as the suggestions already made here.

Take care and my very best wishes to you.
