Social housing application support

Hello all,

I am wanting to apply for social housing, but I need advice on completing an application so that I am given a band 1 or 2 banding.

I have ASD, BPD, anxiety and depression.

I believe that living on my own now would help immensely with those conditions, by making me more responsible in looking after myself and helping with social skills and alleviate my social isolation.

I would like to apply for a two-bedroom house, as it would offer a spare room for either sensory support - i.e. as a sensory room - or as a spare room for a carer/family member to stay over if I ever needed them.

Please advise on what I need to talk about on the application. Some of the questions are about how social housing would help me with my condition and health.

Thanks,

If you use this link and select Housing as the topic, it should help you find local advice.

Unfortunately with social housing it's an extremely scarce resource with very high demand.

Realistically you are extremely unlikely to get your ideal which is a 2 bedroom property and will likely to be offered one bedroom only.

So you might be better off thinking of ways to make a 1 bed property work for your needs, such as generous living room to fit in a sofa bed, some 1 bed flats have a box room that could be used as a sensory area etc.

Either that or look in the private sector for a 2 bed, if you are benefit funded again it's unlikely you would be given anything other than the 1 bed LHA rate. Some local authorities keep a list of benefit friendly landlords.

Each area can set their own banding priority and with the information you have supplied here, it's unlikely you would be offered band 1 or even 2 in some areas. In many areas homeless people in 'urgent or high' housing need are band 2.

You will also find many councils reluctant to offer you a 2-bed unless you are in receipt or PIP/DLA/AA and can evidence the need for overnight care.

Have you looked at the banding criteria for the area you are applying to?
