Pip review or new claim

I follow quite a few help groups and have noticed so many people asking for advice lately because they’ve received letters from the DWP saying their PIP award will end on a set date and if they still need support, they have to make a brand new claim, not just send back a review/renewal form.

A lot of people are confused because they were expecting the usual shorter review process, not starting all over again. Some have called the PIP line and been told this is now how they’re doing things, replacing the old review system with full new claim forms. For some people

Normally this used to only happen to people who won their award at a tribunal, but now I’m seeing it happen to folk who were awarded directly by the DWP even some with awards longer than 5 years.

Has anyone else had one of these letters or heard more about this change? It feels like quite a big shift and I’d be grateful to know if this is official policy or just something going on in certain areas.

I just received letter saying I must apply for a new claim despite being awarded 3 years ago by dwp (not tribunal) when I normally receive a review instead. I would like to also know why this is.

@Holly_Scope im seeing more of these coming up in groups day by day . My daughter pip ends next year so we are abit concered this is going to be the case . I wondering are they doing it to make it easier to deny claims .. For example say on the last claim they awarded for certain reasons then when you renew they then say we cant you award you for that reason this time , you can then do a mr refer back to the origional claim form saying there has been no changes so dwp need to give a good reason why it was allowed in the last claim and not the renewl . But with them making people reclaim instead of renew this may stop claiments being able to thats

Hi @faydhar. I haven't heard anything about this either. Just to add my personal experience, I was awarded at tribunal for 2 years and am currently going through a review. I wasn't asked to reapply. I wonder what their reasoning is. If we find out anything we'll let you know.

I know of three people who experienced this who called PIP, were put through to a case manager who told them the letter was sent out in error and sent them out normal review forms instead. These were three unrelated cases.

“I’ve looked into this more, and yes it should not be happening. It is a mistake when people are not given renewals and are told they have to reclaim instead.

The problem is that some staff on the PIP helpline still give incorrect advice, telling people to make a new claim so their payments don’t stop. But this is wrong once you are awarded PIP, you should get a renewal review, not have to start all over again.

If this happens to you, you should definitely challenge it. I know several people who were told the same thing, made new claims unnecessarily, and ended up going through more stress and delays than they should have.

There have been some updates now, and it is definitely a computer‑generated error. So if anyone receives a letter telling them they need to reclaim instead of renew, just as I said before call the helpline straight away.

If the person on the phone tries to tell you you must fill out a whole new claim form, ask to speak to your case manager. They should be able to sort it out quickly and correct the mistake.

Hopefully now that the DWP are more aware of this issue, all their staff will be properly updated and it will stop the call handlers giving incorrect information

I have only just read today that some awards are also being extended without a review,reviews that are due later this year 2026 and 2027,so I decided to register online to view my PIP award which is due to end September 2027,it now says my entitlement has been extended to 2030,that means i have not had any assessment since 2020 because it has already been extended without any face to face,Ive not any letter yet but as I read earlier today some had got letters saying their award has been extended and some have checked online which is what i done,this award takes me over pension age which I become a pensioner officially March 2027
