Single to joint claim. When will first payment be made?

hi everyone, I hope this is going to make sense after so many Google attempts!

Myself and partner have decided to move in together. We both had single claims. My assessment period went from 19th - 18th and my payment is pending in my bank for tomorrow (I bank with Monzo) so I know I’m getting my single payment.

My partner would have been due to be paid the 12th. He provided me the linking code for the joint claim so it’s his assessment period and payment date on our new joint claim.

I’m just looking to ask if anyone knows how this will work with the payment on the 12th as I’m obviously paid my own single payment tomorrow… surely they wouldn’t pay a couples amount on the 12th if I’m being paid tomorrow? Can’t find many answers so thought to try here!

Hi @emma100201 Did your partner not receive their payment 12th? I'm guessing you've not received any paperwork for the joint claim, providing payment dates etc. I've not been through this before, but it might be worth giving DWP a call tomorrow if you've just been paid your single payment to understand what's happening with the other.

Sorry I feel like I'm not much help but hopefully one of our members has been through something similar and can advise today. Either way, would you let us know how it goes please? ☺️

hi sorry I mean he’d be due to be paid his single monthly payment on 12th July! But now we’ve done a joint claim the payment date is still 12th July but not sure how it works in terms of the actual payment as I’ve just had my single claim payment paid. Will it be a joint claim payment on 12th July? It just seems we would then be paid too much as I’ve just had my single payment with the children’s element etc on it as well if we were to get a joint claim payment 2 weeks later on the 12th

Hello @emma100201

When you move from a single claim to a joint claim, and both partners have previously claimed Universal Credit, the new joint claim will use the assessment period that ends first.

With a payment date of the 12th, am I right in assuming your partner's assessment period runs from the 6th to the 5th? If so, those dates will become the assessment period for your joint claim, and you should receive your full joint payment on the 12th.

yes that’s the assessment period for the new joint claim it’s the same as his previous single claim. That’s helpful to know thank you. I had so much trouble trying to find an answer!

amazing! Thank you so much! It was all very confusing I just wasn’t sure how it worked as I was paid a single payment on the 25th I thought that totally wiped out being able to be paid the joint payment on the 12th! Just a quick question if you don’t mind? With my single payment I was paid my housing element. Now obviously with the joint claim and being paid the 12th I’m assuming the housing element may not be included as it was paid to me for the same house on the 25th? If that makes sense sorry!

Hi @emma100201, you likely already have the statement now but it should include the rent/housing element. If it doesn't, it it meant to. 😊
