Would it be possible to make a fake 45 gun out of modelling clay?
For my The Shadow cosplay project? I have everything else for the costume, I just need the prop weapons, going to Smyth's Toys would be an option but the problem is, they make even the toy guns that realistic these days I doubt it'd pass security at a Con.
So would making one out of modelling Clay be an alternate option or would it just melt in the current heat?

I've only used modelling clay a handful of times, but from what I recall it was fun and as long as it has enough time to set, it's pretty solid but can be broken if it takes a bashing. What kind of gun are you thinking about - have you got a picture?

Definitely less complex than a big one but lots of intricate bits too I'd be a bit nervous about. Are you going to give it a go do you think?

I wouldn't recommend waving a replica firearm around these days, I would go to the event sans imitation handgun if it were me.

Have you considered using cardboard ? As in cut out the individual strips, pva glue to laminate them together, then a coat of pva glue and paint it black using poster paint
The grips could be scored with a craft/ stanley knife and pva'ed

Oooo that's a brilliant idea @WelshBlue… would probably be quite a bit cheaper. Especially if you can get hold of some cardboard around you.

I have them now and again mate … sadly the silly ones outweigh them over the decades but hey ho
I did it years ago when my daughter was in Uni and wanted to go as Lara Croft. The beauty of cardboard and PVA you can sand it slightly to 'shape', then just recoat it
… and another beauty is, if you get frustrated and throw it … it's too light to break the window 😉

Military personnel carry real weapons alongside civilians at parades, and real weapons or high-quality replicas are used on film and TV sets. Why are ordinary people prohibited from using replica weapons at entertainment events where they are required? Isn't this discrimination?

Because then they'd stop buying knifes and people would be made redundant, why do you think they stop people carrying guns..really? It's a mad thread anyway and scope shouldn't encourage these sort of posts.

Owning a knife in public (unless someone is a Butcher for instance and even then there's restrictions) is HIGHLY illegal in the UK for obvious reasons.
Here in Sheffield a guy got stabbed in a pub in Town last week, plus there was recent stabbings in Darnall and Firth Park, some of which ended up being fatal apparently.
More to the point, I've been attending comic cons for nearly 13 years and have regularly seen guests carrying prop weapons that are clearly NOT real, even I've gone as Star Wars characters carrying fake plastic Lightsabers.

Owning a fake gun is illegal too remember! Props should be left there and not carried around from show to show.

I don't think anyone could mistake a fake lightsaber for a real one. 🙂
A small handgun though, could easily lead to a misunderstanding. While it's legal to carry one in a crowded public area, it may not be worth the risk.
Some real guns are made of ceramic so that they don't set off metal detectors at airports. You could potentially make a clay gun that looks real, depending on your skill level. The cardboard idea is a good one. Whichever way you go, just make sure it doesn't look real to someone stood across a crowded room.

I have. It is legal to take a prop to a comicbook convention. As long as it's very obviously a prop and doesn't look real.
