    Nope. Anyone who's proud to be British dosen't know anything about this country's barbaric history, or if they do, think it's a good thing. The empire where the sun never sets was a net negative for humanity.

    I can't spend my life feeling ashamed because of the bad things done in the past, especially when every country has committed terrible acts at some point in its history. Some ongoing towards their own populations even today.

    Of course, there are plenty of things to criticise, but there are also many things to be proud of and grateful for.

    I'm proud to live in a country where healthcare is free at the point of use. I'm proud to live in a country that supports the most disadvantaged. And I'm proud that, for the most part, certainly compared with many others, we strive to be a tolerant and inclusive society.

    It's a complex issue, but I don't think it's contradictory to condemn the wrongs of the past while also taking pride in the progress we're making and the country we're continuing to build.

    I feel fortunate to be British, and I recognise the opportunities and advantages that come with that. That doesn't mean ignoring our history, it means acknowledging it while also appreciating the good and working towards something better.

    I think both things can be true.

    You can be proud to be British whilst also acknowledging (and being aware) of history and the past. It's actually fascinating history. I remember many years ago I was selling flights and using Galileo (GDS system developed by british airways) and I said to the girl who was training me (graduate-posh) how do I know who flies to where? She answered 'colonial history' and she was right! We weren't the worst (Belgium probs have that crown) but we were fairly successful at it.

    I went traveling in my early twenties and the lady who owned the sandwich shop I worked was greek cypriot. She absolutely hated me for being British!? Me - like really… noticed she didn't mind Pip the public school girl though! Funny that aye.

    I'm less ahamed of our history than our possible future direction.
