CURRENT PIP EXTENSION LETTER WAVE - what length extension did you get given
so most of you already know that a wave of pip extension letters to current pip awards due for review started being sent out this month (June 2026).
The majority seems to be 2 or 3 year extensions but I have read of some 4 year ones (which I presume are reserved for the 10yr rolling pip awards but if someone could confirm or counter that would be useful to know) and a few 18 months, 12 months, 6 months & even only a weeks worth.
These extensions can be appealed (just like for an initial pip assessment and the reviews) via mandatory reconsideration and then tribunal (you can appeal if you disagree with the care and/or mobility elements but also if you think the award length is too short) - though obviously these holds risks of losing what you already have.
what I’m having trouble understanding is why some are getting only 2 years extension but others 3 or more years?
Is it done to the original award points for care & mobility, the length or start/end dates of the original/latest reviewed pip award or even the nature of your ‘primary disability’ ?(are some conditions being given longer extensions? - it would not shock me if the dwp are giving mental health/neurodivergent primary conditions a lesser extension length)
Therefore I post the following questions to those who have already received a pip extension letter this month via their mailbox or checking their current pip award details via the gov one sign in
(Only answer the bullet point questions you feel comfortable with sharing):
- start & end date of your last pip review award given (eg June 23 to June 27 - ignore recommended review dates)
- the length of given extension and new end date (eg 2yr extension with new end date June 29)
- What your current award is for care and/or mobility pip elements (standard or enhanced or you can post total points you got for each element)
- What do you consider to be your primary/most dominant disability/health condition
- Are you happy with your extension and if not are you considering summiting a MR (would you appeal if you were happy with award itself but thought you’d been short changed on the extension length)
im massively aware that by 2028 (when many of those 2yr extensions end) not only could pip criteria be massively tightened via upcoming reviews but the universal credit health element wca could be merged/linked to pip assessments - from 2028 claimants of both uc & pip could be double hit in income by a massive amount
the cynic in me sees that a minimum pip review length is now 6 years (5 years to recommended next review date) and a 2 year extension is only a third of that - it makes you wonder if the dwp are removing pip claimants from the frying pan with the intent of throwing them directly in the fire 2-3 years later - this is the dwp we are talking about after all
id also be interested to here from those with enhanced mobility+care awards but a disappointing extension length - are you tempted to appeal to try and get an extra year or 2. Obviously this is most risky at tribunal stage but what are the chances it blows up in your face at MR stage (or even if you call the pip helpline and ask them to explain the decision behind the length of your extension)

Do these letters go out to people whos reviews have started. My reveiw forms were handed back in january , had a couple of texts saying nothings moved. Pip due to stop in sept . Wait wait wait , system is flawed.

After seeing a few posts about this on here I decided to check my own PIP expiry on the online system today. Mine hasn't changed yet, but I've still got over 2 years left. I wonder how short the awards have to be for the latest wave of extensions.

My end date is December 2026 from a 4 year award (previous was 5 from LR care) … to date no review notification by post or text … no review forms
So in limbo one way or another

I have been told that you cannot do a Mandatory Reconsideration of these new PIP extensions. I have checked on ChatGPT and they also say you can't.

My pip was due to be reviewed
April 2027 and got my letter today
And it's now may 2030
It's a big relief to be fare
As I'm struggling at the moment having broke my vertebrae into 4 pieces

Hi, my partners award was due to expire August 207 and he got letter today saying it was extended until April 2031 which takes him past state retirement age.

I had the letter this morning … from Dec 2026 to Dec 2030
I wasn't expecting 4 years … unless they've got hidden footage of me stuck on the floor 🤣

Ours expires on May 2027 but been only extended for another 1 year to June 2028. Get enchanced for both so cant understand why only 1 year extention.
Letter does say they might extend again, whats the chance they extend again?

My husband was initially sent a letter for a two year extension and a few days later , another one for just a year. His mobility has got a lot worse . Should I send the latest medical records to PIP.

My next review was due on July 2027 now it's been extended to July 2031 which is a relief as I struggle with assessments and forms.

In that case you should make a Change of Circumstances.
The extensions only apply to people who's conditions have stayed the same.

Only you can decide what to do.
Medical record are not sufficient evidence unless you can prove how your husbands disability affects him in order to qualify for pip.
You also risk them looking at your husbands award as a whole and potentially they may deny his right to receive pip, they may keep his award the same or increase it.

Thank you @luvpink . He is on enhanced / enhanced with lifelong critical illness neuropathy meaning he has to use a mobility scooter for the rest of his life so I was surprised he only got a years extension. It did state that they couldn’t review him on time so payments will continue until they do and they will be in touch. Would this be the same letter that is being talked about here ? That’s why I’m wondering if I should send in the latest consultants letter and the latest test results he has had in which clearly show he won’t be fixed within a year ! Many thanks

I think there's a bit of misunderstanding on what these extensions are for. They're just to allow the DWP to catch up with new claims and COC's before reviewing older claims.
Does the letter specifically say that you can appeal the extension? I would be fairly sure there isn't an appeals process for these, as they aren't a new decision.
As your husband currently has Enhanced on both I would have to recommend not mentioning any change of circumstances to PIP now. Nothing to gain but everything to lose.

I've just had my letter this morning
My pip was due for renewal in Sept 2028 and its been extended until Sept 2031

That's great news @Welliboots93! I'm in the middle of a review so no extension for me but I'm really glad they're doing this so people aren't left in limbo for so long and worrying.

I have not seen any reports from an initial due date of 2029 or later. So it does seem to be specifically targeting claims that are due to expire before 2028. I too think it is potentially to push these claims into a period where the assessment will be different, as the new 6 year rule is live or will be very soon, its better for the DWP to give short free extensions now, instead of at least 6 years on a review.
The other reason could be to push any most recent award to the 6 year mark, so e.g. if its 4 year award, then get a 2 year extension.0
