Hi we are trying to fill in my new pip review form and cannot get my head around the question Tell us why and when these needs began. someone on you tube channel said to just put the condition that stops you from doing the task and the year it was diagnosed is this ok to do that? because it's causing so much grief. Any advice or info please, Thanks

@ketokidThat's basically what I put. And why it restricts me.

It's all so confusing. My review form was sent off Feb this year. I am on tender hooks.

And this is why people tend not to bother applying for benefits they're entitled to, for all the sense they make, the forms might as well be in flippin' Mandarin Chinese.

It's definitely a confusing question, but I think you're right!

As others have said, I would take the 'why' as being details of how your conditions prevent you from doing the activity in question - why you have these needs. So you've already gone through what support you need to do the activity if any (prompting, aids, help from another person) and the last section is for when you started needing help with this, and how your condition prevents you from carrying out the activity more generally.

As an example, if you had grip issues from arthritis and can't chop food, open packets to cook, safely use a hot pan and so on, due to the pain and stiffness in your hands. I would think that would be the section to talk about that and give some examples of how you're affected.

And you're right @SheffieldMan1976, these complicated forms can really put people off and I'm sure there's loads of people out there who are just too exhausted to deal with them. Hopefully we'll see some change in the future.

    Hi

Personally I wouldn't rely on anything said on you tube regarding benefits.

Its best to seek help from genuine people like Citizens advice, Turn2us or other free disability advocates.

@ketokid Hi, sending warmth :) I’ve just been through my own PIP review and it was really demoralising to go through so can appreciate what you’ve said. For that question around ‘when this began’ I used the dates and information from my original PIP form three years ago to showcase that the difficulties listed three years ago have not improved and even describe how they’ve become worse in the subsequent three years. Of course if there are new challenges and things you struggle with since your original PIP award then please add those to your review papers

I can also affirm what someone else has said about Citizens Advice, they really helped me during my PIP review and I’m sure they’d be happy to help you too :)

Also, if you feel you don’t have enough time to complete and return the papers you can ring the PIP number and request an extension without being penalised. I got two extensions, the first for two weeks and then they gave me a month on top of that when I called again during the first extension. Both times, I was not penalised or deducted

If you have any other questions or would welcome help and encouragement and support you’re in a very good place here :)
